Deep Water Fishing

Can anybody help with some info on the deep water fishing off Rotto.

In nautical miles, just how far out is the 125m to 200m area and what is the minimum size required/recommended for a boat to get out there.

Thanks in advance

depends where your heading

depends where your heading from but you would be looking at 45 to 55kms out to those areas, boat size you would be looking at minimum of 5.5m and always make sure you carry sufficient fuel, if the wind picks up, its alonggggggggg way back in when your only doing 10-12 knots. always be very cautious and dont take risks

I don't plan on going out there, just asked the question because I find it interesting reading about the lengths some people will go to for a fish.

When you say 45-55km's, is that measured from Rotto's West End or from somewhere on the main land like North Mole?

From the West end of Rotto you are looking at about 9.5 NM to the 150m line

Got to agree with Mako,it's a bloody long way home if the weather turns a bit ugly

Have had a trip that took over 3.5 hours back to Pt Peron when the weather came up way different to the forecast and thats in a 7m boat........

I go to the Fads...

...2 or 3 times a year in an open 5.8m centre console. That's between 27 and 30 nautical miles each way, water depth=180 to 220 metres. I only attempt it during the supposedly best boating months of the year in terms of wind, March/April/May, because anything before that you're virtually guaranteed southerlies every afternoon, and after that the Fads are gone and you have winter storms to deal with.

So, quite possible to do it in a smaller boat, just get the forecast right, and double-check it on multiple websites. And be 100 percent sure of exactly how much fuel your boat uses and give yourself a 1/3 safety margin...that is, plan to finish the day with no less than one third fuel left in your tanks.
