THE deaths of two rare dolphins found tied to a block of concrete have enraged Great Barrier Reef conservationists.
The snubfin dolphins were found by recreational fishermen on May 23 in the upper reaches of Two Mile Creek, north of Townsville.
Authorities believe the dolphins were caught accidentally during netting.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority field management director Mick Bishop said this type of behaviour was totally unacceptable and was being investigated.
"Their deaths should have been reported.
"Instead, there has been a clear attempt to conceal the bodies of these dolphins."
Mr Bishop said snub-fin dolphins are rare and are listed as "near threatened" under Queensland law.
"(Australian) Snubfin dolphins inhabit the inshore waters of northern Australia and they face a number of threats, particularly from coastal development, habitat loss and illegal netting," Mr Bishop said.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is appealing for information about the dolphins, considered "near threatened" under Queensland law.
Spokesman Mick Bishop said the dolphins were probably caught in fishing nets accidentally but the incident should have been reported.
"Instead, there has been a clear attempt to conceal the bodies of these dolphins," he said.
"Snubfin dolphins inhabit the inshore waters of northern Australia and they face a number of threats, particularly from coastal development, habitat loss and illegal netting."
WWF spokesman Richard Leck said this was a test for the area's fishermen.
"The people who were involved know what they have done but it's unlikely they would have been doing it without someone else knowing they were in the area," he said.
"It's time for fishers to protect this species, rather than their mates."

Looks like some sort of message, if they wanted them dead
They would have just killed them. This is a sick act and we're giving them just the reaction they want. This is not
An act any human being would be proud of, what kind of
Person can find justification for such a sickening act?

Accidentally killed?
Read that apparently they may have been accidentally caught and died in a net by commercial fishers. Which then to avoid having to report it may have tried to discard the bodies so no one would find out. Either way its a very very sad situation for these beautiful animals to die. But if it was an accidental its more a case of them not doing the righty once they were dead.
I have no doubts that there have probably been countless other marine mammals, birds and turtles the have wound up dead at the ends of nets and long lines, but are simply discarded of more better so no one ever knows.
Poor Dolphins.

hmmm, if it was an accidental
hmmm, if it was an accidental catch by fisherman in a net then he cant be a very good one because he doesnt even know where the low tide mark is.

Lots of hypotheticals at the moment.
He may have put his net where he wasnt supposed to and/or left it in to long before checking. As for the seemingly stupid place to 'hide' the bodies, who knows, he may have sent his deckie to do the dirty work, who may not be all that intelligent to do with tides.
Was a similar incident in Darwin around 2001 where some Commercial fishos had netted/drowned some crocs in their nets they illegally place across a river mouth, got found out because his deckies hid the bodies above the low tide mark in the mangroves, yep and fisherman found them.

What pisses me off is the way
What pisses me off is the way the head line has read just to catch peoples attention. It is an absolute tragedy what has happened and something needs to be done but to deceive us into thinking someone has deliberately caught these creatures and tied them to a concrete block to kill them is typical of media bullshit twisting things to suit their story. Just bugs me to read a headline then to find out the story is nothing like the headline has made out.

Dob them in
Dob them in even if you know them but sometimes media hype is needed to get peoples attention.

I'd say that sort of thing has been happening for awhile.
I love it how he says "rather than your mates" assuming that we relate to people who do these sort of things.

Noticed that too Jim..."rather than your mates".
How many anglers would be 'mates' with people that would do this...seriously?
Something smells fishy to me, either way its a disgrace.
