Cray Season

Hi All
There has been a bit of talk about crays and as the season is nearly upon us I just wnated to know how many people are planning on getting a licence this season and where abouts they normally go. Also interested in what method everyone uses to catch them

I will be getting my licence and will head out from Mandurah to the 5 fathom bank and other spots. I like to dive for crays using a cray loop or just use my hands under some ledges. I will also be putting some pots out this year.

Best of Luck to all those heading out this season and can't wait to see the photo's and reports

Cheers
Brodie

No good using cats for bait---they scratch your hands when you try to close the bait box lid on them!!!

Crays

Yes me and the mrs have got our  licences..just have to get one more pot. We will be going out from hillarys, hopefully there is a few around out at the close reefs. I work 8 days on 6 days off...so hopefully get a few good pulls everybreak. Have brought all second hand pots...so if a front comes thru..and i have to fly back to work, i dont lose to much money...also have to use plastic pots as i dont have enough time to let wooden pots soak, every time im back in town.

Occy pots

Sun, 2008-10-19 20:06

Its legal to do it but you won't catch any crays while its there.Anything that rattles or is loose on a pot turns them off and why invite an occy to who eats crays to live on your pot.Breakfast in bed!!

You can try it but you will soon get rid of it!!

Thats a shit hot roster wade, I'm 13 days on and 8 day off. fifo tom price where are you working?

Are the plastic pots any good? because I also have wooden ones which are so bloody heavy and need two people to pull in and because I'm such a tied ass and wont buy a winch. lol. the soak give me the shits but it's gotta be done if ya want the cray.
I've heared some bad things about plastic but i've never used them my self so I wouldnt have a clue.

Working at good old Golden Grove mate! If i had to work 13 days straight these days..i would be a cranky barstard. Plastic pots are ok..wooden ones are heavy..but you need them to be heavy to hold ground

Sun, 2008-10-19 20:46

Only dropped my pots a couple of times one plastic one wooden and neva caught squat! only occies and sharks.

That was years ago and i've dived for crays ever since so much eaiser once you've got the hang of it. Did a few recon dives today, i always try to find a few new spots every year so not to hammer the old faithful ledges come cray season...well today didn find nothin found some great ledges in 5-8meters of water but not a cray anywhere yet mustn't have started their walk in yet

I prefer to dive for them Brodie, use the loop & hands. I like to have a good looky-see whilst im cruising around and seeing fish in their habitat. Normally dive around Garden Island, FFB, Rotto and Tworocks!

I get an Umbrella license that covers everything, cant wait Cool

also got license, heading to Leeman, we use plastic pots, old fart and me can't pull slatts in anymore,  our roster is everyday is a sunday.  Just watch out of back of Garden Island, get pulled (not by you & stolen) Friends have lost/stolen so many pots, watch out for tinnies from Herring Bay (they come from those big expensive boats) & divers (sorry fellow good divers, some not nice) they'll raid pots.

Got my licence last week and now packed away in the boat.  Will be in Port Denison for a week for the start of this season.  First time there, so will be a new learning curve.

Looking forward to it after a very busy few months at work.

Cheers Pete

Mon, 2008-10-20 12:48

If your using placcy pots i highly suggest putting heaps of weight in them, placcies tend to roll in the swell and crays wont go in, also suggest putting macca or supa lid bait baskets it, much better than using bait pockets wired in, if any one needs any advice please feel free to pm me and im sure i can help, seeing i do it for a living.

Nothing better than pieces of flesh done in a frypan with bitter and a little bit of garlic---yummy.Beats doing them on the bbq by not losing the butter/garlic mix.J ust take the shell off and cut into mouth sized bits

Away from the cold

Mon, 2008-10-20 18:36

Live in Carnarvon,Roberta.away from the cold weather. Can still get a feed of crays quite easily up here, though not as easy as when I lived in Two Rocks, was there for 15 years and don't think I missed out on a feed on opening day in that time.
The trick with the cray is to get the meat from the tail in one piece without mangling it.Very simple if you know how.
