This crab and chicken thing

Going to get the crab nets dusted off and fixed up and have promised the kids I would take them down to our local marina perhaps on weds to see if we can get some.

I've used old fish frames for bait and bought some frozen mullet before as well as using these blue sardine/mackeral type things that the cray boat didn't need. By far the best bait was fresh mullet, followed closely by pink snapper frames, but I've heard of people using chicken frames is this true??

If so, do you use cooked chicken frames or raw, do you age them or are they fresh??

Any help would be much appreciated and would help keep the kids amused.

Cheers

chicken heads

Mon, 2010-09-20 18:39

When I was a kid living in Mandurah we used to use chicken heads left out to stink a bit, they worked excellent on blueys. Put the hooks though the eyes.

Butcher

Mon, 2010-09-20 19:09

Yes most butcher's would have all 3 at some stage. Might have to talk to a few and get them to hold onto some for you. Failing that lamb necks are also available from most supermarkets and sometimes spleen is too.

Fresh fish frames work the

Mon, 2010-09-20 20:29

Fresh fish frames work the best I reckon but anything will catch them if they are there.  The problem with most meats including chicken is you get that white fatty shite that ends up covering your bait.  The meat seems to turn to poo!  Let us all know how you go.  Good Luck!

I reckon lamb shanks are too

Tue, 2010-09-21 04:22

I reckon lamb shanks are too expensive these days, so i'd go with lamb necks or spleen (or kidney or liver).  Just make sure that whatever you use to put it in bait mesh so the blowies don't eat your bait before the crabs het there!

I found chicken wings work

Tue, 2010-09-21 08:39

I found chicken wings work great ... the skin is all rubbery and the blowies take a while to get through it ... and if you keep your eye open you can get em quite cheap .. down to 2.99 per kg..  (get about a dozen wings to a kg )

ive used frames, but coz there already skinned the blowies tend to strip them clean in no time ...

Frames

Tue, 2010-09-21 11:14

Have found that chicken frames and most animal products except spleen don't come anywhere close to the results you get from fresh fish heads or frames.

Tried doing a comparison a couple of months back with me using fish and a mate using chicken and both of us crabbingin the same area.I was back at the ramp hours before him and then he didn't get half of what I got.

I'll let you know what

I'll let you know what happens.

The blowies aren't really that much of a problem as I use those plastic box cages so they can't get to the bait.

Spleen is a great crabbing

Tue, 2010-09-21 12:07

Spleen is a great crabbing bait and last a long time around blowfish. Keeps on bleeding and cheap too.

Just got the one crab, used

Tue, 2010-09-28 12:49

Just got the one crab, used lamb necks and had 4 nets going, few smaller ones but that was it.

Size one went 160mm, so not bad.

Got some spleen today so might try again during the week.

John I find tinned cat food

Tue, 2010-09-28 12:58

John I find tinned cat food works really well when the crabs are a bit slow. Just puncher a couple of holes into the tin and then cable tie it to the bottom of the net. Lets out a good slick that crabs can't resist. Combine that with a few fish frames to keep them there and you can't go wrong.

As for lamb shanks

Tue, 2010-09-28 14:06

Bugger giving them to the crabs. Taste as good as anything slow cooked. Try Fish heads through the eyes. The best in Mandurah by far.

chicken frames work

Tue, 2010-09-28 20:51

yes chicken frames work pretty well, but you have to wire them on the net ,i tried them first time this year and the crabs loved them, you can get them at any butcher shop, but my all time favourite crab bait has to be mullet heads especialy in the swan river

Chook wings

Fri, 2010-10-01 17:41

Had good success with chicken wings and they are cheap and seem to last longer than spleen. If you are south of the river, southdale pet meats has cheap crab bait, sheep necks, horse spleen etc, but i have found if they are around any fresh bait will do the job.
