Good guess Bodie. It's now a 5! I'd be getting the hell out of there. I have no experiences with cyclones but personally I wouldn't want to be around when a cat 5 hit town. Not worth mine or my families' lives I reckon.
The track map is saying Cat 5. Looks like it will be going straight over the top of Willis Island shortly. Isn't there a weather research station out there? Might get some interesting data before everything blows away.
Yep Willis is an early cyclone warning station. A mate of mine did a 6 month stint there a couple of years ago. She posted some stuff up at http://squishedbugg.blogspot.com/ if you are interested.
from the blog:
I live on an island 450m by 150m, 500km North East of Cairns in the Coral Sea. The island has a population of 4 people (including me) and a whole bunch of hilarious birds, hermits and some very friendly sharks. We don't get mail, or visitors, or the chance to leave the island for a weekend trip to the mainland... its six months straight of weather and nature. We are here working as an Cyclone Early Warning centre for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, its a voluntary tour of duty and the experience of a lifetime.... I've travelled around the world 3 times, but this is definately my most challenging adventure to date....
Good luck Queenslanders. Shit that is bloody well huge. I hope all turns out well for you all. Stock those eskies boys - its gonna be a loooong couple of days
And there plans just doesn't stand up to the Action Plans up here in Kcity and the NW. You dont see any blue, yellow or red alerts. At least this way we all know what to do when. There it just appears a panic with no organised plan of action.
Got to call my best mate and Man Dave in Kurunda to make sure he is not planning to do a tandem Skydive in the next few days. If he does he might end up on my doorstep!!!
when bianca went through karratha searipple camp was meant to evacuate to gap ridge. however the so called action plans didnt work and they left it to late to get out. apparently most of the dongers arent even cyclone rated. so he slept in his car hahaha. mayby need more re-hersals
not only is now a CAT5, but being touted as bigger, stronger and meaner than Hurrican Katrina or anything else that has hit Australia in living memory.
wind speeds now predicted to averageover 220km/hr+ and peaks at 320km/h, the eye is nearly 100km across
THIS IS A MONSTER AND A KILLER ONE!
hope the folks in Nth Queelands come put of it allright, they have had a battering of late.
first heavy falls hitting Townsville right now on the weather radar. That monster is coming in strong! pushing heavy rain already 450km ahead of it!!!!!
Just been talking to a friend and they are saying that people are being turned away from 5 of the 7 evac centres. At least poeple are heeding the warnings and getting out befroe its too late.
getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.
we are feeling the effects here in bris from it with rain and some wind....it hasnt been too bad but with it bearing down on us it will get worse here......it is supposedly 500ks wide this thing and ive heard if they could harness the power in the eye then we could power the world for a year......
ive never in my life seen or heard anything like this....as they say QLD , beautiful one day... fucked up the next....! with all these floods and shit and now this.....just keep prayin...its all you can do!
Keep us posted if you can. but priority one is stay safe.

this article shows how big it is in world terms.
anywhere else in the world and it would be killing thousands of people, we just lucky our areas are soe remote and low in population.
if this thing hit Japan, Tiawan, India or even USA it would have been beyond anyones fears.
looking at the Townsville weather radar again, shows heavy showers and fast moving fronts coming in!
Lets hope and pray for our country men & woman that side, that they come through ok.

I am very worried
about my son and his wife in Townsville, spoke to him this morning and was getting a wee bit windy, he's well and truly prepared, 40litres frozen water, everything battened down and all emergency supplies in water tight containers, fuel in two cars and motor bike, extra screws he's put on the roof, very anguishing times ahead for everybody from Cairns down past Townsville.
