Claiming duty free on tackle

I assume that it can be done, much the same with cameras etc. Buy it within 30 days of departure, present your receipt at Customs and claim the GST back - right?

Has anyone actually done it though?

You can do it with almost

Mon, 2009-09-14 17:19

You can do it with almost any goods, but there are a few conditions. Theres the gst refund scheme (tourist refund scheme) which is the 10% gst back and then theres duty free, but I dont know how this works exactly now that gst was supposed to replace a lot of duties.I assume you mean the first one.

The government site is here: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4366

It seems you have to carry them in hand luggage only, and be careful about bringing them back in in terms of taxable items and all that. Not sure whether it would apply in this case or not. Importing stuff, under $1000, you dont have to pay gst though, so i'm guessing it would only matter if you bought stuff over that. Even then, if you've used it overseas, then maybe its not taxable anyways?

you can claim tackle, present the receipt at air port, you only receive the gst amount back and you must take items with you. Did back in april to fiji.

what value was yours?

I'm looking at ~$1000 (1 x stella) after taking off the 10% duty, which is technically over my $900 limit - so how strict are they? Generally I have found them quite leniant if you aren't taking the piss.

huggy lures mainly, but i also brought a camera and jewelery, so i dont know if the 900 applies on one item, they were pretty relaxed on the claims, but i was in brisbane air port.

also depreciation

Mon, 2009-09-14 19:41

You should also be able to claim a % back if used whilst o/s.....

At least this was the case years ago... I managed to claim depreciation on some camera gear on arrival back in Aus.. helped to offset the payable duty !

be aware if you are claming

Mon, 2009-09-14 21:19

be aware if you are claming the TRS,you will have to pay that duty back when you re-enter Australia, if you are a resident. ( although customs will rarely pick you up on this)

The TRS refunds the GST

Mon, 2009-09-14 23:10

The TRS refunds the GST because the goods are leaving the country, but customs can levy it when the goods reenter. Don't worry, they never seem to.

yeah, don't worry too much. They are more concerned about quarantine, illegal immigration and drug traffickers!

Depreciation

Mon, 2009-09-14 21:42

use it overseas and when you return to Aust list the depreciated price not the purchase price. That will save you plenty of $$$$. Check with customs before you depart. Ask direct questions as they are not there to rip you off.
