Changing 50w halogen downlight globes to 7w LED globes problem (not fishing related)

Gday all just a quick question for any sparkys on here. I decide to change 50w halogen down lights to 7w LED lights so took the old halogens out and replaced 3 halogen globes which are controlled by one on/off switch and 2 halogen globes which are contralled by 1 on/off switch (5 globes in total under my alfresco the two on/off switches are located together. When i turn the switches on some leds come on some dont if i keep turning the swithches on and off the globes all go on and off in weird combinations some on some off at different times! WTF! but when i change just one halogen to an led on one light fitting controlled by only one on/ off switch no problem do i need to change the transformers or what if so what type please cheers dave

 I changed a globe on a

I changed a globe on a bedside lamp to a led types- one of those that can be dimmed by touching the lamp frame - and found that it worked OK on one touch but flickered when dimming to the extent that it was not usable.

When I read the instructions they said that the globe was not suitable for dimmable situations and I suspect that the voltage is reduced by the lamp and the correct operating voltage threshold was not there whisc caused the flickering.

This may be causing your problem.

The led globes used when

Fri, 2017-05-12 10:42

The led globes used when retro fitting 12v downlights are very temperamental. Certain globes will work with some transformers and not others. In general the cheaper the globe the more problems your likely to encounter. Do you know what trannys you have?  Same goes with dimmers and led globes working well together.

We have found a few reliable globes that work well or better yet replace the whole fitting, quality led downlights are cheap now.

PM me for more info.

Yeh retrofit not worth it

LEDS can have a minimum loading will depends on your combination or Switches/dimmers/trannies/globes or you just have ghosts...

Yeh retrofit not worth it anymore unless you cant get the fitting out.

New LED fitting all incl from wholesaler $12 and dimmable haha

A decent retrofit globe like the Phillips are thats price and still wont like some dimmers/trannies

 The problem with the dimmer

Fri, 2017-05-12 12:36

The problem with the dimmer i would suggest is because the led globe is not really suited (especially if a cheapie?/maybe even in general) to being used as a dimmable. Where the light doesnt actually get dimmer it just is turned on and off hundreds of times a second (very quixkly) so it appears dimmer, and as you turn it brighter the time between it getting oscillated between off and on reduces until its at ull brightness and it is just constantly on.

Could be wrong, aint an electrician.

Did the same refit a few

Did the same refit a few years ago.... and the trick is....

There are two types of transformer. Iron core and switchmode. The switchmode are more modern and efficent but require a load to start up. The problem is LED lamps present such a small load to the transformer they may not start it.

What lamps did you fit? Some of the more expensive lamps such as the phillips master series present a high load on startup to kick the transformers over. Even then some brands of transformers will still not start.

Had to swap out a few Possoums for Redbacks (Types of transformers)

Check with your lighting supplier for a compatable transformer!
