Of course :p More supple braids will give you more distance though, but any braid will be better distance than mono as brenz said.

As for it being too stiff: fireline, the stiffest braid (well, its fused, not a braid), was actually designed for eggbeaters, as the stiffness is supposed to hold it better to the spool and come off more evenly with less wind knots (at least in theory). So the stiff braids are actually designed for spinning reels, while the softer ones will work on both. You dont want to run a stiff braid on a conventional reel as it can get knotted up easily. Not so much of a problem with mono (despite being stiff) because its also springy unlike a stiff braid (or more so fireline). That being said, I have seen fireline used on overheads (but there are better choices out there).

i have a 300 yard roll gathering dust.

Mate , I run up to 50lb on my 850's no problem. I know of people running 80 lb braid on them jigging.
