Flattery

Flattery will get you everywhere Russ.

How big is your boat?

The wind is slowly starting to drop off,its been the worst windy season for years.Depending on the weather, you can head north up to the Beejaling shoals or Fitzroy reef just south of the blowholes ,its nearly always good for pinkies and spanglies with the odd spaniard thrown it.
The Lady Joyce wreck gets a bit of a hiding early in the season but still manages to produce some good fish if you can stand releasing thousands of undersize pinkies and nor west snapper.
For someone who is a newcomer to the islands there is good ground close in all the way round, off shore is a different matter as the spots are only small lumps well scattered.

Pinkies and nor west snapper, spaniards, tuna cod ,blue bone and for the lucky, red emperor are al being caught at this time of the year.

Good article Jay. I'm going to have to plan a trip down that way as there's more than just wahoo down there. Craig Radford has fished it heavily and written quite a few articles over the years.

Land based

Heaps of spots to get to land based.
You can camp at the Blowholes for about $5-10 a night,Quobba and Gnaraloo you will need to book ahead to get a spot. There is some camping allowed at Red Bluff but not sure of the details.

As well as the spots already mentioned don't forget to try the ladge from the Blohole itself all the way north. The rocky bottom only extends out 60-100 metres from the ledge.North of the Korean Star wreck on the shallow stuff produces some good spanglies and spanish flag.

carnarvon! there is NO FISH THERE!

Wed, 2010-04-07 14:44

just kidding,

if your landbased, maybe head to quobba for some fish, nor westers, pinks, spaniards, gamefish etc.

also do not under estimate the 1 mile jetty, go there on a big tide and use whole mulies with little to no weight and 70cm tailor not uncommon

but you must get the tide and moon right .

high rock is a good place to start on quobba with the safety wire that you can tie up on with huge cod, sharks and northwest snapper.

but when fishing quoba even on a place a high as high rock(king waves have swept people in here as well) always keep a eye on the water and have a escape plan so if a king waves is coming you could jump in a hole or go behind a rock

look  at my avatar picture, thats high rock, pretty amazing how a wave can swamp this rock

try and use heavy gear on the rocks because its very likely youll hook up a shark or the good old resident cod(can be very annoying)

and NEVER FISH THE ROCKS IF THE SWELLS IS UP or its very rough

The jetty is open as far as the shed, the end needs a lot of repairs done before its re opened.

Jay,no I haven't read it,haven't bought fishing mags for years and years.

Try the beach

Wed, 2010-04-07 15:05

try the beach in front of the camping ground just south of the blowholes.  Good for mullaway if the sharks don't get the bait first.

last time i went

Thu, 2010-04-08 14:34

few months ago or something(family grew and uncles and grandparents still own plantations so i go their quite a bit), i might head up next week and if i go fishing i'l report back but its mainly a dirtbike trip this time.

anyway, last time i was there, the jetty was opened only up to about a quarter, this is why it was essential to get tides right otherwise you'd be fishing in the break zone or in very shallow water.

just becasue only a quarter was open, doesnt mean the fishing is bad, all the tailor fishing i mentioned was done in the quarter

we done a little experiment we're my grandad used mullet fillets and i and my brother used unweighted mulies

my grandad caught 8 taloir within the 35cm-40cm range

me and my brother caught 6 tailor withing the 50cm-60cm range

thats a lot of tailor so we lot most go

get there just as the sun is setting, dont bother getting thier early, you'll be greeted with lots of birds that grab your mulies and fly or the sky-very very annoying
