Canning Flats Today(18/12/2010)
Went for a flick in the Canning this morning to break my Swan River Flathead Duck. Ended up with no flathead and instead caugth a 32cm Tailor on a pink and yellow scorpion. The tailor hit it on the first wind of the handle and gave me a good little run on my light tackle. Iwas using a shimano sienna 2500 with 6lb Finns and 6lb Kamikaze Kieru (Cheap ebay) flourocarbon.
Still No flathead landed but got my first swan river tailor. We fish a stretch of bank from the canning bridge upstream down to mount Henry Bridge.
Birds were hitting schools of bait fish out in front of South Perth yacht club for a good 30 mins which could mean there are a few tailor around.
Any suggestions of better flathead locations would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Duffman

decent tailor man. try the
decent tailor man. try the flats between canning and narrows, and also the flats/weed beds behind the raffles, all the way up to the yacht club for the flatties. there are plenty around but a bit of wading is required. we had to wade out about 60-70 metres before i got a flatty lol

Try Claremont Jetty, the flats that run all along there, was a few caught last night got a 43cm one last night but weather blew all the weed in, other places which are good, Mosman area flats, flats along the Red herring freo, I dont usually wade out i chuck a 1/2oz vibe quite a distance away and try to find anywhere to stand with a higher point to look.

When i chase flathead i'll
When i chase flathead i'll only use softies ive found they catch alot more than the hardbodys, in my experience anyway. Try using a gulp minnow in the 3in or a squidgy 70mm flickbait on a 1 or 1/0 jighead of about 1/8th to 1/12 depending on the wind. As for technique slow hops making sure the lure makes contact with the bottom after every tweak of the rod. Ide also recommend changing ure leader to around 10lb as a decent flatheads raspy teeth can make short work of light leaders.

Your right about the SP
Your right about the SP killing it on the flatties, very deadly and works at night as well in semi light conditions, actually came back from a night snorkelling sesh before at point walter, there were quite abit of flatties about in the shallows, lost a vibe to a tree haha so that ended my fishing session fast.
