cancerous lures????

hi guys

just recently bought a baby vib 35 in the purple colour. just as i was about to put it in my lure box i saw a caution sign on the bottom.

one side said watch out for the sharp hooks

and the other side said this product contains a chemical known to the state the of california to cause cancer and birth defects.

after reading this i didn't want to go near the it!

so we went back up to were we bought it and asked one of the staff about it.

one person said, what type of company would sell a lure that can cause cancer in humans, which is going to be in a fishes mouth and that fish is possibly going to be eaten? good point

he thought it might have been a coating put on the lure or something to do with the chemically sharpened hooks.

so we took it home and put the lure in a bucket of detergent and water to see if that might wash the stuff off.

what do you guys think that the chemical might be? i think it might be lead.

Its a lead warning.

Its a lead warning. Probably it should be on any lead product, it doesn't only cause those problems in california, they just tend to be very forward on these things. After all they banned leaded petrol in the 60s and it was done locally in the 90s.

yeah lead

Definetely a lead warning. All the old shimano reels used to have the same warning on them and kind of freaked me out but you aren't eating the reel so should be fine.

There was a lead warning on

There was a lead warning on my stella. What part of the stella is even lead?

Nothing really to worry about for solid lead (besides, its encased in plastic :p). California just has some pretty strict rules, because technically lead causes cancer (though its not all that dangerous in solid form).

yeah if your worried about lead causing the cancer then your never going to want to pick up another sinker again ... most of the tackle shops are now selling lead in plastic bags because of this ... all a load of crud if you ask me :)

lead

I studied in the States. If I didn't remember incorrectly, anything that contacts ANYTHING harmful in the manufacturing process needs to have that warning if it's to be sold in Cal - it was called Proposition 65?

Since a lot of naturally occurring substances are also harmful or can cause cancer/birth defects, some unusual stuff also has that warning.

The warning labels were also sometimes not very consistent and there is no requirement to tell you what substance they are warning you against.

there are so many things

Sat, 2009-12-12 07:17

there are so many things these days that have warnings on them i cant be bothered reading the stuff. you will find most thing that have been painted will have small traces of lead in them . some higher than others as over the years some products from China have been recalled due to higher than normal readings of lead in the paint. imo , if you are worried about this then i wouldnt be buying anything with paint on it

Just get a grip guys

Sat, 2009-12-12 08:13

I wont mention what I do for a living. But for god sake get a grip. Lead fumes, ie when you make your own sinkers are toxic, and does not cause cancer but a nasty blood abnormality.

We use sinkers all the time. Some new bio sinkers from cast iron are a different prospect, but unless you eat the sinker what harm is going to come to you. NIL.

So use the sinkers with glee, use the reels and the vib and stop panicking about all the cancer causing stuff on labels. DONT GO IN THE SUN. it causes cancer much worst than any of these product!!!!

Hope you can still fish!

Proposition 65...

Sat, 2009-12-12 09:14

...I wish my marriage proposition had a warning!

In California lawsuits happen at the drop of a hat so manufacturers of a potentially hazardous product have to cover all their bases. I'm a big user of soft plastics/leadheads and if it was a genuine threat I and all the fish I've caught/released probably wouldn't be here today.

WARNING - Fishing is an inherently addictive sport. It causes sleepless nights, poor concentration, twitching in your sleep and possibility of financial ruin. In some cases also causes an unexplained annual migration over rough terrain, putting the addict in the way of serious bodily harm. The condition is terminal and rehabilitation is not known to work. The addict also has the ability to spread this condition within his community.

More likely the plastic

Mon, 2009-12-14 14:36

Hi Ya,

Much more likely to be a warning about the plastic used to make the lure than lead.  It is well documented that a chemical called "Bisphenol A" leaches from polycarbonate plastics into water at room temperature.  Bisphenol A is a known  carcinogenic.

Cheers.

 Hi Ya,Can't say for

Tue, 2009-12-15 14:18

Hi Ya,

Can't say for certain but I suspect not.  The leaching process isn't a rapid one so I suspect the fish will be landed and taken of the lure before any 'damage' can be done.  I suspect the fish would have to have contact with the lure for a considerable period of time (hours) to actually be of concern.

To be quite frank though, I wouldn’t worry to much about fishing lures as polycarbonate is used to make a whole range of things that will cause you much more grief.  For example, drinking bottles and drinking glasses food storage containers etc.  I might also add that there is a demonstrated statistically significant correlation between the concentration of Bisphenol A in the urine and cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  So it is a pretty nasty chemical.

BUT I must also point out that there is agreement among those studying polycarbonate water and food storage containers may be that using sodium hypochlorite bleach and other alkali cleaners to clean polycarbonate is not recommended, as they catalyze the release of the bisphenol A.

Cheers.

dont worry

Fri, 2009-12-25 13:10

honestly davy dont worry because if youre worried about than you should be where gloves when touching it, my penn spinfisher also has this warning sign and i'am not dead or abnormal after 2 years, remember sinkers ARE 100% lead and every fisherman touches one at some stage.

and percides, you aint eating it, and it will not contaminate the fish, the lead if any could be inside as a rattle etc.
