Hi Ya, Welcome to the forum

Hi Ya,

Welcome to the forum and hope your trip to WA is memorable for all the right reasons.

I'm an ex Bunbury boy but haven't fished there for more years than I care to remember so can't tell you much.  I can say that the general (and unwarranted) panic in this country after 9/11 saw a number of spots we used to fish as kids closed off to the pubic - eg the breakwater and land backed harbour.  Couldn't believe my eyes a few years ago when driving around to show someone the area that it was all fenced off. Frown  Can only assume it still is.

Someone that currently lives down that way will respond I'm sure.

Cheers.

What to bring?

Thu, 2009-01-22 18:49

Just bring 2 outfits 5ft or shorter with reels filled with 15kg line or better, braid if possible we hunt big Dhufish and Snapper. We usually leave the boat ramp around 6am and return at 3pm or earlier depending on the weather. Bring a basic tacklebox but I'll supply you with the rigs that I use if you like just to get you started, I use a running sinker rig it has not failed so far.

Cheers Kev

How many rods?

Fri, 2009-01-23 09:17

How many rods will you be bringing with you? is what Maggie asked tis morning, I thought 2 or 3. May have to add a short "diggin" outfit for Dhufish. Do you fish bait on the bottom? Anything special you would recomend that I bring?  Anything you can think of that may be available in the states and hard to find in WA?I don't get the oppertunity to fish offshore that much this should be great. Couple of other web sites

You could try Western Angler and Hotbite. Fishwrecked probably has the most in put though. A few guys from Busselton get on Hotbite which is just down the road from Bunbury.

G'Day Dale would  the corner you mention be Cape Naturaliste? Hope they'll be on your doorstep soon. Looks like the Busselton Jetty should be a hot spot. Nice looking boat. HJG Shovel snow or fish?Whats a man to do?

Salmon Season

Fri, 2009-01-23 08:53

I'm hoping that I won't be too early for the salmon season, Can you target them from shore? How are they for table fare? Salmon up here are deffentally a cold water fish, returning to the rivers of their birth to spawn in the spring. can you be specific on Lures, whats your favorite go-to for salmon? Thanks for the reply. HJG         Shovel snow or fish?Whats a man to do?

Probably beach fishing from

Thu, 2009-01-22 20:37

Probably beach fishing from the shore would be your best bet land based wise round here. Target fish would be tailor(bluefish in the states me thinks), and the aussie salmon as well as herring. There is a bit of estury fishing here for bream and whiting with the odd mulloway( they look like a red drum).

There are good tackle shops over here who can steer you in the right direction, rigs, bait, tackle ect as well as a charter boat.

Apart from that a 1/2 an hour south is Busselton jetty. Still havent been for a fish on it yet (and I live here) but meant to be pretty good.

There is an info site for bunbury on the net.

Oh yeh...trout and redfin in some of the freshwater dams and rivers here.

Happy fishen

Fishwrecked sponsors Oceanside and Tacleshack

Fri, 2009-01-23 13:07

Can give you all the info and sell you all the gear you will need.
Beach fishing for salmon is great sport with the Australian salmon getting to a good size down in the south west corner of WA.
Bair fishing and lure fishing are both successful. Speka to the takleshop guys on what lures are being successful.
Bait wise, mulies (pilchards) on ganged hooks are the go.

Mate! PM me and I can help you out as well. Plenty of us with boats here. Maybe Big Kev can put you onto the fish and I can give you the site seeing tour? Any which way, one of us will look after you.

Oh! and ody! the harbour

Thu, 2009-01-22 20:51

Oh! and ody! the harbour area is fenced off due to the Bunbury Port expansion and new port access road about to start. I can assure you there is nothing sinister going on.

Great to see you here Howard, reading through the posts the boys have really jumped on board to point you in the right direction. Even managed to score a ride in Big Kev's boat you lucky bugger!

When I advised you to check out this forum, I commented that it is a "WA website with heaps of great up to date info with a lot of South West WA members always willing to help out".

Well done lads, you've excelled again. This is the sort of stuff that makes this a great forum. Keep it up.

Re salmon/tailor baits,

Fri, 2009-01-23 19:25

Re salmon/tailor baits, lures. Presonally I like raiders in 40 or 60gm. It really comes down to the size of the bait they are chewing on at the time though. Only fairly new to WA. Some of the other fellas could help with that. Baits wise. MULIES, whitebait, frogmouth pillies, ect

A good pair of polarised sunglasses is also a great asset

Fri, 2009-01-23 20:30

So you can spot the fish coming. It can be a matter of chasing them up and down the beach at times.
