Broome does backflip
BROOME BACKFLIP ON DOLPHIN CULL CITY
BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian October 13, 2009, 2:25 am
Broome Shire Council is today poised to reverse a decision to sever ties with the Japanese town responsible for an annual dolphin cull, instead apologising for its actions and organising visits between the towns to "reinforce the relationship". Less than two months after resolving to end its sister city association with Taiji until it stopped the cull, a backlash from the local Japanese community has led three Broome councillors to support a new motion to be discussed at a special meeting this afternoon. The motion, signed by councillors Michael Albert, Nik Wevers and Chris Mitchell, "unreservedly apologises" to the Japanese community in Broome and Taiji for any disrespect caused by its hasty decision and lack of consultation. The motion also recommends inviting the WA Japanese consul- general to Broome, planning a delegation to Taiji to "reinforce the relationship" and investigating exchanges between the two towns in 2011 to mark the 30th anniversary of the agreement. The proposed new resolution, which reiterates the council does not condone the dolphin killings, was yesterday criticised by conservationists who said the council should stand by its first decision. But Cr Albert rejected suggestions it was a backdown. He said the council had failed to get the full story from the entire Broome community and rushed its original decision. Broome shire president Graeme Campbell would not comment other than to say "there's a strong chance" of the new motion being passed by the council.

meh
60 minutes showed enough of the killing for me on Sunday night, if they're going to do it, atleast make it humane. Equating dolphins to sea cockroaches, unbelievable.
I can see the difficulty though, we eat fish and kill a lot of sea life - I guess they could consider dolphins as fish. We used to kill whales, they still do. Its a very hypocritical situation, but still, they're wonderful creatures that don't deserve to be butchered in the way the Japanese do it.

I was at the premier showing
I was at the premier showing in broome with the guy Ric o Barry there just before he was going out to Japan. He was there to speak to the audience and councillors to get their support. The audience was very against the cull and wanted to sever ties immediately....why are they reversing the decision?

Maybe threatened to show
Maybe threatened to show killing of Dugongs on Japanese 60 minutes?
Culture is hard to grasp. How many Japnaese eat Dolphin though? Is it that widely sought after? Apparently MacDonalds is bigger than whale meat which has taken a dive in popularity.
The Japanese have a great sense of pride. If the Japanese started telling Australia what to do there would be that element of resistance. They probably feel some of that from the world.

in decisions like this one
in decisions like this one they have made it comes down to a big choice , do we stick with our morals or do we just bite our bottom lip and go for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ,in a town like broome they would rely greatly on the tourist $$$ to keep going and without the support of the Japaneese they would find it hard , jmo.not that i like the thought of killing the dolphins ,it makes me sick to see such horror, it comes down to realistic values

Can someone enlighten me on
Can someone enlighten me on the whole " sister city " arrangement? I mean what does it entail and what, if any, are the benefits to either party? Just a little bit interested in the whole thing.
If the lord did not mean for us to eat fish and game, he wouldn't have made them outta meat
