Boat Ventilation..
Submitted by chookc on Tue, 2010-08-24 17:38
Ok have a 7meter ali Hard top Wave blazer.. I need some ventilation when moving alone in the cab.. Its not practicle to open the front hatch as this lets spray into the bedding..
Now the side and front glass are all fixed... Costing in excess of 600 dollars each to convert side glass to slidong windows.. not an option at thisd time..
Was suggested to get a scupper and mount it on the roof to drag air thru the cab..
Would this work and if so where would you possition it..
or other sugesstions

Rig some conduit or flexible
Rig some conduit or flexible hose at the rear of the enclosure on the outside (pointing forward); run it around the corner and forward to the front of the cab and maybe turn back to your face. You don't have to cut holes in your roof and this would be a very cheap test. Of course this will only work when underway.

Scupper on roof
Chookc,
the scupper on the roof might not be the best idea for other reasons (aesthetics, hole in the roof etc), but if you buy a good quality scupper, it should not leak. I installed one of those aluminium ones in the roof of the fibreglass canopy on my Hilux so that I could get some airflow for the dog. It never leaked. Obviously I didn't open it when it was raining, but my point is when closed, it did not leak, even when travelling at 110kph in the rain. The aluminium scuppers have a strong closing spring, a rubber seal and a raised lip, all designed to prevent water getting in. To use on effectively on the cab roof of the boat, you would have to point it at the bow (so the hinge is towards the stern) so that it acted as a scoop when on the move, and would scoop in air when anchored from the bow. Bear in mind though, that it would also scoop in any water coming over the cab if you punched into a steep chop for example.
