Bloody hurts - anyone else experienced this

Anyone got any advice. Stepped on a stingray  around 3pm today. 15mm Puncture wound on the top of my foot that bled for about 1hr non-stop. Wasn’t too painful then. But now my foot has swelled up and it’s throbbing pretty bad. Toes are all tingly. Have done the hot water, which does help, but can’t sleep with my foot in a bucket. To top it off, i’m On a camp with my son, so limited medical supplies and have to tough it out for him to stay. A few beers and Eagles winning helps. Somone offered to help get me smashed with Bundy, but i’d Prefer them to hit me over the head with the bottle than drink that stuff. Any advice of what to expect appreciated. Have put antiseptic on the wound.

Was camping remote at the mouth of South Alligator River in Kakadu when a bloke got hit by one. He toughed it out for a few days in agony before they had to cut the trip short and head in for medical help. Hot water was only helping for the time it was submerged.

If the swelling increases

If the swelling increases like up your ankle etc or the puncture mark is oozing I'd seek medical attention asap.

The hot water definitely works. 2 mins after removing the throbbing starts again.

Swelling has stayed the same for the past couple hours, but will continue monitoring.

Think a trip to the docs will be in order tomorrow.

Piss on it . May help with infection

The slime on barbs can cause a huge infection. As pointed out prior. Can turn nasty. Also soak in vinegar. Never wash in sea salt water.

Bloody hurts

Had a brush with stingray 10 years ago, and I know your pain.

Had pain killing injections by doctor, but the pain went on for two days, then tapered off.

If the barb has broken off it must be removed (I was lucky with that) and as said above, the slime causes problems.

Doctor visit needed to check for broken barb, and tetiness injection.

It’s been 15 hours sine the sting. Pain has subsided from a 7 down to a 2 out of 10. Swelling has gone down a fair bit too. Had a couple of Panadeine Forte (I keep some because of a bad back)  before bed which allowed enough pain relief to get to sleep.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback. Sounds like infection is the real issue, so a trip to the docs will be in order today.

Interesting how heat kills the pain though. Got a bit hot during the night and stuck my foot out from under the sheets. Within a few mins the throbbing increased. Throw my foot back under the sheets where it’s warm and the throbbing susides.

As soon as possible you but

Get and see a doctor, I can understand your feelings about the camp with your son and the importance that these things carry

However, your own long term health also has importance, and, as been said a couple of times above infection from the slim on the barb can have serious consequences which will come to light a couple of days later.

I can’t speak from experience however I have seen the results on a friend of mine and it was not good and required some intensive treatment with antibiotics. Not trying to upset you or cause unnessary concern, but, you do need to take this injury seriously.

got hit with a stingray barb

Mon, 2019-04-01 12:25

got hit with a stingray barb back in 2012, at coral bay

very painfull ,

stuck the foot in red hot water , just under boiling /burn temperature , took panadol , and a beer ,while i ate lunch ........sat like that for about an hour ....then had a kindy napp in the van

woke up feeling fine , foot was swollen for a day or so ,
biggest thing is to get it into really ,really hot water asap ........

scorpion fish got me in the right hand last year miles out fishing in boat ..........pain wise it was far more intense that the stingray imo and my whole arm went numb with intense waves of pain constantly while we came in and loaded the boat, then drove home , no hot water treatment for several hours did not help ......

makes two of us.

I was fishing on Sat night - 30/ 3/19 a couple of km off Palm beach boat ramp and hooked into a ray. I managed to get it to the boat, turned it on it's back and while I was extracting the circle hook it flipped it's tail up and got me on the inside of the wrist. Blood pumped everywhere, I wrapped my shirt around the wound, pulled anchor and headed in pretty fast,It was very dark. Suprisingly, to my relief by the time I reached the ramp the blood had stopped. Pain wise it was mild, less than a Bee sting but the bottom line is that these rays are very dangerous creatures and just not worth mucking around with.
