Big Marlin

Had my first attempt at marlin fishing yesterday. We had 2 outfits in the spread, 24 & 37 with tiagra50's, trolling around in the 200-300m mark. Didn't know what to expect & was very surprised when the outrigger went off with a bang & line started peeling off, luckily on the 37 outfit! This became apparent when we saw a huge marlin with both of us putting a weight of at least 150kg on it jump out of the water. 5mins of frantic preparing the boat & harnessing up & we set ourselves in for the long haul! With many jumps which still confirmed the size we both thought on how we were going to bring it boatside being that big & only in a 6m boat & just 2 of us on board! Unfortunately after 45mins of a gruelling battle the hook was spat but we were happy with the result & a huge learning curve. What a fish & what power.

Plenty of dollies out there but a bit finicky with only one brought on the boat & a few stipped tuna to finish off the day on light plastic gear.

What an eye opener for Metro marlin. Didn't think i would see that day for me.

nice work - always a lot of what ifs in that situation - I think that is half the appeal, if it was easy to get them to the boat we would lose interest

Marlin Classic

Tue, 2011-03-08 10:32

We found out in the arvo that there was the marlin classic on yesterday & we heard the reports coming in. Probably 4 marlin caught that we heard, all small blacks around the 50kg mark. I thought the one we hooked was a black & my mate thought it was a blue. I guess we will never know!!

how do you think you would have gone if you had been trolling 10 or 15 kg line?A word of warning it will become an addiction that will cost $ when you land one

15kg line

Tue, 2011-03-08 16:21

I don't think 15kg line would of got anywhere near it! We were running 80lb & had trouble. Maybe if i had 8hrs i could try it!!! Softer on the back aswell!

Definately an addiction. Just makes you realise there's more to fishing than pulling a dhuie up!
