Hey Adam, what hooks and size

Hey Adam,

what hooks and size are you using?
can send you a care package of some BKK hooks. Been finding these not to suffer from rust as bad as others brands we've used in the past.

Stopping hooks rusting:

Stopping hooks rusting:

While in boat always put used lures/jigs/rigs into a tray or open topped/divided container in the cockpit when swapping them out - never back in lure-box.

At end of day leave all the used lures/jigs/rigs to soak in a bucket of warm/hot soapy water for at least 15 minutes. (I use the same water that I dipped a rag into when cleaning rod guides and reels). I normally leave them to soak for longer than 15 minutes as I soak them when cleaning/packaging the fish at home.

Hang up to dry overnight/next day (unless stinking hot).

No moisture/salt in tackle-box = no rust.  If any moisture or salt then spray on oils/protectants will not be effective.

Any lure-boxes that live in the boat are of the type with a rubber-seal to keep moisture out as much as possible. (definitely don't put wet lures back in these!!)

 Yeah I'm with sunshine.

Yeah I'm with sunshine. Those dehydrating siliica gel packs you find in supplements, medication tablets and some dry food packaging. Store them with my lures as well as spare hooks and other terminal tackles.

Once used - lures with singles and trebles, I soak them in Salt-X solution (salt removal solution) for at least 10 mins -sometimes half an hour or more before hung out in the alfresco to dry.

I do not store them untill they are all bone dry.

Works on 99% of my hooks. Some hooks still rust because they are high carbon steel with no coatings.

I also inspect all the hooks (trebles & singles) before storing them away.

Sometimes, abrasion between split ring and hook eye removes all the coating away. What I do is use a permanent marker to pain the inside of the hook eye. Same goes to the hook point.

What irks me most is the insertion point of hook hangers and tow points. These days they don't make lures where the ABS plastic wrap around the hook hangers fully (sonic sealed). You will find nooks and crannies and gaps between 2 halves of the lure body where the tow point and hook hangers enter into the lure body. These gaps trap water and is very hard to remove once saltwater enters it. Soaking in water sometimes didn't work. When the lures dry out externally, saltwater still remains in the the gaps. Once the water evaporated, the remaining highly concentrated residue will ooze out when the weather is hot, corroding the crap out of the split ring, hook hanger as well as the hook itself.

For trebles that are already rusted (especially the nickel/black type of trebles), I will soak them in vinegar or Coca-Cola. Rinse and air dry. Scrape away any visible sign of rust and paint over with permanent marker - extend the life of the hooks considerably.

Really useful tips

All these tips are great and  made me realise I should go to a bit more effort, especially if putting gear away for a while. Mostly though I'm using the same lures each week, often still tied on the rod, so a rinse in fresh has been usually enough  until I lose them!

Lanox.  spray some in with your hooks when you're not using them, or wipe over the hooks if you're leaving your rod rigged up.  It's great stuff (made from sheep) and doesnt put the fish off
