Flats
Hey mate,
Learning to fly fish is on my to-do list so i cant help you out there unfortunately. As for locations I often see guys fly fishing the big flats on the Western side of the stirling bridge. Its relatively protected from most winds and i have caught plenty of flatties around there.
Hope that helps a bit. Cheers

Hey mate, you shouldn't need
Hey mate, you shouldn't need too heavy gear but the lighter gear and shorter rods can become hard to cast into any wind. The point walter spit is a good place as you can fish either side still casting with the wind.
I would highly reccommend getting lessons to start off with, if you have a good technique early on it makes starting out that much less frustrating and more enjoyable
Good luck, it's a fantastic way to fish, hope you get into it

8# would be ideal to learn
8# would be ideal to learn with, start on an open park and work on your technique rather than trying to cast too far. Just practice casting the fly line without a fly attached. Heaps of stuff on the internet,Youtube will have plenty of stuff for beginners. Flathead are a great fly target.
