rightio then .all things considered it looks like this weekends tides might be a good chance to head to Karratha and see if i cant loose my Barra virginerty .
i was chacing a few tips from the local boys who always do realy well .
when live baiting ,how do ya pinn your bait ,i.e through the lip ,through the back ,through the tail?????????
how much wieght do you use?
is it a sliding sinker ?? do you use any wieght??? how long are your leaders .do ya think fluro carbon is the go.
also with soft plastics ,im guessing a very slow retrieve .am i close or way off.
any help would be much appreiceated

mitch i got a few on Sp's this year including one dropped very big fish (meter plus) each time i have been casting heavy slick rigs into holes and very very slow bouncing off bottom retrieve. Last night i dropped one on the troll doing about .8 knot so very slow
I use a #1 ball running sinker on 80lb mono leader (i like jinki)80lb for livebaiting, 60lb for lures. I use about 1.5m of leader tied on with an allbright to the main line (no doubles)
I hook livies through just in front of the dorsal fin 7/0 or 8/0 like a piercing
Got a decent fish last night, tides look good for this weekend, wind might be a problem. Should catch up for a bevy mate, or i might even see you in one of the creeks, have a beer there. Look out for the fishwrecked sticker mate

I prefer to use my livies
I prefer to use my livies unweighted as I've had more results that way, I think it looks more natural... let's the bait swim around.
If there's quite a bit of current you might need a bit of weight, a #1 running ball sinker like Brad said or #2 at the absolute most.
As already mentioned, 80lb for livies or 40/60lb for lures. Only use flurocarbon for lures... & just regular mono when livebaiting.
The slower the better when trolling lures, Brads got a troll plate on his boat and it gets us under 1 knot which is good. When lure casting just enough cranking of the handle to get the lure moving is all you need, combined with a bit of a jerk of the rod tip now and then should see results.

this weekend is the Kakadu comp on the Aligator rivers and billabongs, As live bait is a huge 'no no' and no bait at all allowed in the park, it's lures only.
I got a peek at a few pro-boy's tackle box's yesterday as they where filling up with fuel;
the big go is gold soft plastics and green/gold soft plastics. Lures are mostly imported B52's Bombers, Readies B52's ( gold & blue/green), Readies Little Lucifers ( loads of colour combs), Nile Masters in blue, green and red/white. Couple had surface poppers in green/blue, green/gold and silver. ( also a few custom made lures from Haclo and some local lure makers kept well out of site... bet you these are the "ones" best guarded at night...lol.
Some had fancy home made spinner-flies and what looked like big american bass lures as well.
Biggest tip I keep getting, is to remove the middle bottom trebble and slowly troll or wind in the lure ( very slow) bumbing on the bottom or over snags /rocks for best results.
ps, best fish this last few months in the area have been some 120cm fish and a monster horse of 132cm take on the Mary river... so Build-up is well on it's way and the best is still too come the locals keep saying!!!!

one of the bluenose threadies we caught on saturday .didnt even smell a barra for the day let alone land one .had a great day though .frizzas first 2 cast for the day saw 2 threadies hooked .took me about 4 cast on SPs to hook and land one .had some good runs on livies but only managed to land 1 size jack .
was a good day except we ran out of beer waiting for the tide to let us out of the creek.
i learnt a fair bit about live baiting and stocking the esky.
p.s didnt go hungry though as i ate my fair share of flies for the day.they were thick at times
