Bad News on Salmon
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2009-04-01 17:00
Was listening to ABC at lunch time, they were talking to a pro salmon fisherman from the Albany area.He stated that they would be lucky to net 150 tonne this year compared to the usual 1500 tonnes.
He said the water temp was 22-23 instead of the normal 18-19 for this time of the year, which means they have probably spawned out wide and are on their way back east. All in all its spells a non event as far as a metro salmon run goes for this season

Hopefully next year will be a ball burster to make up for this year

Yep! I'm with you Damo! We just might be into them at Cape Arid! Also glad I made that trip to Yeagarup when I did, at least we did get into a few Salmon.
2 weeks ago the water Temp off Bunbury was 24 degrees and last week it still was 21 - 22 degrees so there might be some truth in that report from the Pro.

Always worth a try Curt
Last year was pretty bad metro wide, but a few people managed to find some. You have got to be in it to win it, so I would give it a go in a few weeks as some salmon schools were seen around the Busselton area a week or so agao.

Reliable
West End would have to be the most reliable metro salmon haunt. If any reach the metro then thats where they will be found.

strange
the leewin currrent has been a bot closer in this yr from what ive been told, i know a guy who had a sambo eaten buy A marlin, spooled him 10nm out from canals 2 weeks ago, also dollies out at the wave buoy, sw off coral lumps.with big tuna, seen a few more turtles also, the water is deff warmer, big salmon are few n far between, schools netted so far have been only around the 6 tonne mark, some guys have netted salmon trout, loads of smaller ones around, cple of days ago small schools made they,re way around bunkers, and the bays, west coast has been ok but huge wells have been a pain in the ass for landbased. this week should be ok, as easter usually peaks, few yrs ago we had a massive ground swell , wel this happened again cple days ago, its dying now, but that brings them in so i,m told, and now the swell is small lets hope they stay in..

Salmon
There's been reports of schools as big as football fields down in Albany and there was plenty around on Saturday, with boats trolling all over the place and apparently doing well - and that includes pretty close in.
Don't know about the comparative overall numbers though, but I guess the profs would be the ones to know.
