Any excuse will do!
A mate of mine works for Fisheries research and said he's needing fresh frames (tissue samples) especially Hapuku and Bass Groper. He's studying the Biology & Genetics so I said any excuse will do, we'll get out on the next best day. Monday's weather was looking sweet so off we went, fished the deepwater but had to find the buggers!
My mates second drift/attempt with 3 big baits going down, result a triple header of Hapuku;
Two were similar size, the other a bit smaller (not in picture), the biggest Puka (weighed) 16kg;
I did a few drifts after that, with missing the fish/drift & them just not bitting so I went and looked for them again and dropped on top of em...jiggy jig jiggy jig and whamo i'm on!
Bass Groper weighed 26kg on Sanme jig!
Was a magnificent day on the water, much cooler out there and an easy ride in!

The triple header must have been hard work to get up.

Great work Buddy. I had no doubt that the hot days would mean deep water for you. Great result. Now that is a research job that we all want......

good work yet again ryan.
good work yet again ryan. well done lads
what depths do you start finding these fish? what sort of structure are they hanging onto??
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I'm also interested in doing tissue samples. When can I pick up a fillet of one of those beauties.![Wink Wink](/sites/all/modules/tinymce/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif)

Be great to see what the results are re age structure and spawning habits, guess that info will be quite a way off though. :( Great catch fellas.

info!
Cheers fella's, sorry for delay....been down south marroning!
Decella, i've got 2 F/G ice boxes, one 126L (main ice box) and the other 105L (back-up)
Goodz, I use a Daiwa electric reel matched to a Ozflex 24kg Offshore Sports rod. I fight all my fish manually unless its a shitfish, shark or empty jig which is then powered up but any descent fish is done the hard way, as I say to mates i want to earn my fish (just my pref)
Mick/Grayzeee, I work the 200-500m depths for deepwater species, these fish coming from the deepwer end of that scale this time. Not alot of big structure just drop off/edges and looking for fish!
Adam, yeh he's looking at Biology-with age growth & Reproduction. He's also looking at Population Structure/Genetics....interesting stuff so far but yes early days!
Eltaco, how big do they get, a 80kg metro Bass that was a comercial capture along time ago was sold at the fish markets!. A big one now is approx 60kg but as Russ said Kasey got a stonker Bass (state record) on jig, on my boat last season that went 46kg!
Biggerfish/Just Dhu it, easier now indeed but hard when I first started but all my reconaisanse has paid off. As for distance, depending on where I launch from as many different spots but its about a 2 hour steam one way and any deepwater fishing isnt easy unless you dedicate yourself!
Cheers
