9' Spin Rod - Shore Based
Hi All,
For the last 15 years I've been a dedicated bait and surf fisherman. However, after really enjoying my first summer of lure/SP fishing last year, I'm now looking to try it more from the beach/rocks, and need a longer rod.
My current SP setup is a 7' Shimano Starlo Squidy and 4000 Stradic. I've had a lot of fun with it, but now want to get into flicking plastics/slices/poppers from the beach etc where I previously would have ran a mullie etc (will probably continue to soak a bait on my surf rod, but want to be able to flick some lures at the same time)
I think I'm looking for a 9-10' rod (2 piece) to match up with my 4000 Stradic (with ~20lb braid) for under $200. Does anyone have any comments/recommendations about the following rods:
Shimano Jewel 902 (haven't seen one)
Shimano Starlo Classix 902 (felt pretty good in the store, but guides didn't look brilliant)
Fishing WA (FWA) 9' Spin (very interested in feedback on this rod)
Shakespeare Beach Elite 9' (don't know much about this one - haven't seen one)
I want to be able to cast an SP on 1/2oz jig head upto a medium slice (40g) or 100mm popper. Targeting Salmon, Tailor, school Mulloway etc.
Appreciate your comments.
Cheers,
Drof

Go the fwa rod
I'd go the fwa rod imho... awesome rods for the money. Great blank can fling a slice a mile and super light, you wont even know youve been holding it all day long. Cant fault it really and with the fw discount at Oceanside you can't go wrong for the price too.

I've been looking around for
I've been looking around for ages for a similar setup, although in 10-11' range for the same purpose - living down south i deal with alot of swell and what not. 80-90% time i'm using lures/sp/poppers but occasionally i like to bait with a mullie or what not - depending on conditions, so also needed a rod that could do both.
The Starlo Classic has SeaGuides - i don't think they do braid too well and they are only really recommended for mono. Agree with scere_182 on his recommendation out of the ones above.
After ALOT of research and time spent looking at gear and waiting for specials i bought a 10' daiwa sensor surf yesterday for $175, bit of a bargain imo - would also pay to look at these sensor surf's if you can get one at the right price.

ive got a fwa 9ft and love it, agree with scere_182 you can launch a twisty a mile with these rods. mine is matched up to a 5k stradic with 20lb braid, but it could definately handle up to 30lb. suits your needs 110%

Thanks for all the
Thanks for all the comments
The Daiwa Sensor 10' was on my list, but I looked at one in the store and thought it felt a little stiff for SP's or lighter lures. Can anyone recommending one comment on the Sensor's ability to throw SP's? The other rod I looked at was the Seajigger. Very nice, but a little too focused for my needs.
No feedback on the Shimano options?
The FWA seems to fit my requirements but there are none in stock at present - unless someone knows where there is one?

back when honsu was at oceanside, he told me the fwa rod had a much better action then the starlo stix one (which after playing with them both, i saw it does). that was the reason i bought the fwa rod.

ive got a 9ft starlo, not sure which model, think its a 3-6kg or something and its good with metals and poppers, not so much plastics, way too stiff for plastics

Different
A rod that will throw poppers like richters will be too stiff for soft plastics. I usually want to chuck them as far as possible when LB and the sensor surf does that. Soft plastics you will want a more flicky and probably shorter rod, I suppose you could chuck lighter poppers also like halco roosters

Rig, Yeah, I'm only looking
Rig,
Yeah, I'm only looking at throwing Roosta's etc. Basically cast weight from around 15 to 50 grams should do me. While the sensor is rated for 3/4 - 3 Oz (20 - 80g), which is about right, it just felt a little stiff for plastics or lighter lures.
I really liked the sensor though as a surf rod, and may look at upgrading my old 12' glass rod with a Señor next year!

Sensor
Yep I reckon you might be right, but it may surprise you. Take your reel and a jig head with plastic down to the shop and see if they will let you have a cast in the carpark. If they won't then take your money elsewhere. Otherwise if you can catch up with me before Thursday you can have a go on mine.
When you upgrade your 12 ft get the 13ft sensor it is an unbelievable surf rod.

another option maybe
A 9' shimano tiralejo spin was for sale on here recently... another rod that would suit your needs perfectly.
Another option to look at maybe?

I went Lemax
Grand Tornament Pro 9' and it's pefect for popping for Salmon and big Tailor. It's very rigid and light as buggery. That gives me confidence to hurle larger weights without worry. It's matched with a Okuma FX 6.5 to 1 ratio real and I pack 20lb braid on it. Not the rod for small soft plastics but perfect for decent size poppers, Richters and metals. After all you did say you were chasing Tailor, Salmon and Mullows in the surf. You need something robust and rigid for that.
I sourced mine with the help of the guys down at Oceanside Tackle and I will never regret the choice. I have had warranty repair of the reel but hey; that happens.

Seajigger
Go the seajigger mate. I have all three models and love them. Plenty of power, great action and light as a feather.
The 315 casts 18-55gm and is awesome for throwing lures. Make sure you check on out if you haven't already.

I like the 9ft Fishing Wa Rod. has heaps of power in it. was at eshed and got a 40kg ray on it. i really put some hurt on the rod with my twin power and i was extremely impressed. I have also been using it for lure fishing for tailor in the mornings and it casts them a mile! just ask Sherbs..was doubling his cast ;)

I also love the 9ft Fishing WA rod. Great casting and so light. It matches well with a 4000 or 6000 size reel.

T-Curve rev 902
Got one a couple of weeks ago from a shop that had them on sale, not on their list anymore, may be a run out model.
Everything I read about them said 10-15kg line weight, on the rod says 8-15kg. Looks the goods to me.
Going to follow Sherbert and strap a Salina 11 on it.

Sorry mate, should have said, mines the 30-70g model, I have put my 4000 symetre on it and it felt good, just that I put the 8000 on it for one trip and its sort of made it there full time, if you want to have a look at it or a cast with it some time you more than welcome. Cheers. Paul.

I have the 902 jewel
I have the 902 jewel balanced with a quantum cabo 40, 4kg platypus 4kg lo-stretch and fish 10 to 25gram metals for longtail and mack tuna. Does the job very well and also does well throwing 20gm in the surf for tailor as well. However I haven't gone over 25gm as I have other setups once I get to 40gm plus and havent used the other rods mentioned so cant compare.

Catana
I've got a Catana 9' and am very happy with it.
There is a 9' Tiralejo at Bluewater Scarborough at the moment (sorry I can't recall if its a spin or overhead so you'll need to call them).
