2011 Exxy comp - When
Just thought I'd put the question out there, I'm sure asking people when they want it and then have it set to another time is just asking for trouble. But here's how I see it, school holidays are around the 22nd of April next year. I'm not sure when easter is, need to find out. Generally speaking the full moon after easter shuts the surface down a bit and if its early April theres still a chance of a cyclone. March is out due to Gamex and the AIBT comp. So it leaves the first 2 weeks of April and May.
Then there is the moons which can be added to it, for the bottom fisher guys the neaps are generally better. So that narrows it down further. Has anyone any ideas when they want the comp so we can start giving everyone plenty of notice.
Cheers,
Adam

nah
August is when the equinoxial gales start (s.easters) still get a few days, but its a lot more hit and miss than earlier in the year. July is usually ok, except the surface activity is a bit slower for the guys that want to troll etc.

April gets my vote, good weather, not too crowded yet and still pretty warm.
The winter months start getting too busy I reckon.

Just a thought, its been a blow out for both comps so far. Would it be better to pick a week that the comp will be in, then you can pick the best 2 days. With most people being up there for at least a week this should work.
Does this make any sense.

Difficulties
The difficulty with having it over a week period is that if the comp goes on like it has over the last 2 years, with it doubling in numbers each year, then I will have to look to getting a venue to host it at as my place can only handle so many. Then the costs of getting a venue will start eating into the prizes. Also I'm not 100% sure I will still be living here then, so may have to hire a location. As is I think the price of entry will have to go up a fair bit more: a) gives more to prizes b) allows me to cater for everyone for a feed on the final night (plus softies + ice etc)
Considering that this year was $20, the last nights feed took out a fair bit of that, so if we double up, then its likely to be some really good prize money and a quality feed.
The easiest option is running it for 3 days to increase the chances of good weather. Having said that, there was still a good window for fishing in this years comp - even though uncomfortable, the fish were biting. The other thing was, the weather on the Thursday after the comp was the best we've had all year, the people that were here still said it was the calmest they've ever seen the ocean.
I think early April will probably be the best, I will check out when the neaps and moons are and post them up soon.

Adam, How many people
Did you end out feeding, and how many are you thinking for next year?
I have a spit roast that can cater for plenty that I would be willing to lend. It is a wood fired one, but it doesnt really take up heaps of room like a gas one with a hood. It has two stands, one of which holds the motor and gearing, a fire box (90cm x 180cm) to contain the coals and a 6' spear.
Can easily do a whole pig or a couple of lambs, or rolled pork roasts and hunks of beef. If any forum members are butchers that could cut costs maybe? Or if anyone is fond of roo shooting? I think we have fed 100+ from it in the past without much struggle, and that was as the main course. If it was a buffet style that could go waaay further.
I dunno if I will be able to make it myself as I am starting tafe this semester, and I dont know if I will continue on next year.
Anyway, just chucking it out there.

Why does it have to be a
Why does it have to be a Exxy Comp?
Why not put a post up each year asking where members would most like to have an annual F/W Comp?... Put to a vote.
That way you don't have to be there should you move on, but the event is decided by members.
Just a thought

i know
Yes the exy comp is good, and people enjoying getting away. But one thing i have never understood being on this site, it why there is no comp in Perth? Alot of people dont have the money to get up north, or the amount of holidays. Over 80% of Fishwrecked members come from Perth and surrounds. Is it just a case of someone organising one????
I think next years should be at Groote Eylandt!

Look I'm not promising any thing
but the Cockburn Power Boats does have a sport fishing section (they fish to ANSA Rules), good facilities, people staying over night (power, tiolets/showers) club rooms with bar and great bbq facilities, fish weighting scales. If anybody is interested, I could approach the Fishing Master and see what can be done for a Fish Comp in Perth, we have held the AAA comps at the Club, non members fished as well. Excellent launch/retrieve and security, wash down area,
PM me if anybody is interested to hold a fishing comp here in Perth and I will see what info I can obtain.
We have reciprical membership with other boating clubs.

April
At the moment we would prefer April, have not been able to se the moon phase yet but the neap tides on my records show April sunday 10th through to 14th or sunday 24th april to 28th which ties into the school holidays, so you either go during the school holidays and book early and we would need to get an idea if exy gets busy during those school holidays or go very early in my view 2nd april etc and hope no cyclones come throughm have the comp over the three days , the weather is the always a guessing game as are the fish

not as yet
Not as yet with the Exxy comp, I will get it sorted soon, but the 9th, 10th and 11th of April seem pretty good. I will double check to make sure there are no other events on during that time.
Can anyone confirm if they can make those dates, if I get a few then I will lock it in. That will likely be a quarter/half moon if its a full moon at Easter (I reckon that quarter moon is best for surface activity and if its neaps then the bottom fishing should be much easier)
Cheers,
Adam

After this year Jay i'd be
After this year Jay i'd be heading the otherway and fishing the neaps, once the tide picked up the fishing just shut down, especially if the weather is crap and you only have a small window you may lose it due to the crapconditions.
Agreed the springs are better for the pelagics but the waether was that shit you couldn't chase them safely, we didn't even get to chuck a popper in anger from the boat for the whole trip
