2010 SALMON RUN NEWS
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2010-02-05 08:47
Hi all, A few whispers are starting to filter out from down south that the salmon are starting to make an appearance.
I thought I would start this post so that anyone who hears any news (and I am really hoping it will be reliable news) of salmon movements can pass the information on.
I for one, am waiting to firm up my plans for some serious salmon forays this year. And I know there are a lot of other members who are doing the same, so we can help each other out here by keeping this post updated.
Thanks everyone, Colin

The West's fishing column didn't have too much to report
today, though it was interesting that some salmon were seen down Denmark way.

Got a couple of bigger salmon trout in the channel at Emu Point last weekend while chasing kg's. Probably only about 50 or so cm's. Schools and bigger ones shouldnt be to far away. Give it another month.

The reports I've been getting
from an undiscloused source in our southeast is that they are still very patchy. The hope is that the cooler weather/water will come in and they'll be thicker around the end of Feb / start of March.......

Young bloke at work and his father got 18 good sized Salmon at Cable Beach Albany close to the lighthouse last weekend.Flying gaff required.
He seems its to think its quite OK to catch 4 at a time take them up to the car and go again. It did happen as he had phone pics.
Perhaps if anybody knows the Albany fisheries officers it may be worth alerting them that this is going on.He bragged he has never seen the Fisheries there.Fishes there most weekends.
I told him he is no different than the Phillipinos he complains about taking undersize fish at Cable Beach.

Had a report
Had a report from a very reliable sourse that there was a 20 ton school just East of Albany on Friday.
Headed down there for a look over the weekend and from the heads on the beach I reckon the report was correct.
Heads appeard to be smaller fish around 5lb.

Saw your other post Beau Yes there are a few of those schools
up and down the coast. They provide some great fun in between the big winter tailor runs and the arrival of the new season salmon schools.
I think you Perth-based guys should try places like Woodman's Point, Cott Groyne and Trigg if you want to catch some of these "resident" salmon and salmon trout.
Sherbs and Dean are the masters at finding them north of the river.

wear good shoes and get some
wear good shoes and get some good polarised sunnies. Most salmon fishing is sight fishing. When someone spots schools, you'll find that you'll be chasing after em lol. Early morning is usually the best time. Probably go somewhere not too far like dawesville. You wanna salmon fish and you just flogged of your poppers and metals? You shoulda kept them coz now i'll be using them when salmon show face. Mwhahahahahahaharrrrrrr

haha
i got a couple more metals. =D
ill just buy 2 poppers and see how it goes. I have never used lures before. Only squid jigs and even then i suck at them haha, never succeeded in catching any squid tho.
Do I need to use a surf rods while throwing the poppers out? Or can I just use my starlo stix shorespin with 8kg pretest line.
Do mullies on gangs works?

You have your best chance to chase them if you head down
around the beaches between the Capes, or between Albany and Windy Harbour. You have to keep a close eye on the reports of where they are, because if you don't get it right you will hear the dreaded words "you should have been here yesterday - they were going off".

rock groynes / reef
i find that rock groynes and a beach with a reef ledge or any reef works best during salmon season. south of the river has plenty of spots when theyre running.. the moles, woodmans point, rock groynes at woodmans point and the asi powerboat association, the groynes in front of austal ships, point peron reef areas is one of the best metro spots, back of penguin island is great, also a chance of getting some jumbo tailor there if ur lucky, the whole stretch of coast between halls head and florida beach is ur best bet to get into them south of the river :) burley up the small fish such as herring, yellowtail, garfish when you get there so when the big salmon arrive, they stick around chasing them while you scramble up the rocks getting your bigger gear :) fishing with a friend is best because one you hook up to one, the rest of the school follow the hooked fish, so you can cast to them, hook up, then your mate can get his in, then cast out to your fish and hook up to another one :)))) sorry for the rambling but slamon realy do get me giddy!!

Just back from Denmark,
Saw a big school at a guess 10 tonne out from 'The gap' But just were not interested in any lure i had with me. Spent hours casting at them but no go.
Talking to the locals, they have only just started showing up there, so will be a while before they get up our way.
I woudl say hamelin bay would be looking last week of March, to April before they are that far up.

Have any of you considered fishing Yeagarup? I fished there last year before Easter and got into some huge Salmon. It's also a place where you can test your 4WD skills and also get into some decent sharks and Mullas at night. Salmon at the cut
In fridays paper the report said a school of 30 or so 4-5kg salmon were in dawsville cut. So their should be more down further south. Im not too worried off to exmouth this week by the time I get back the salmon should be in full swing. Its probably best to wait a few weeks anyway than head down too early me thinks.
Good luck anyway everyone

why U worried about salmon
why U worried about salmon when you got all the awesome fishing in Exmouth!!
To be honest....the Cut fish are random and probably more last year "left behind" school. I hooked 3 there on stupidly light gear and lost them all. They were from out of no where and smashed my squid jig!! Then all I had was 3" soft plastics and 8lb braid and leader!! NO CHANCE. Been back 3 times for zip.
I would wait till the actual season is in full swing before I think about chasing them.

yeh well....not when you're hooked 2m from the rocks and they head straight for the bottom. Off the rocks I prefer something heavier to control my fish more. Later when I get down to the SW beaches, I'll drop down to 8lb and have a heap of fun on them.

Spot on Honsu
There are plenty of resident salmon around town if you can't get down south, but if you want the serious action, hit the beaches between Esperance and Augusta now and then wait for the big schools to start turning up around the Capes in a few weeks time (hopefully).

I just got back form walpole. I managed 1 about 6kg from the rocks around to the west of conspicuous beach.
It's still quiet down there. I did not meet anyone else who had caught one and did not see any schools, The one I caught was from a small class loitering about around the rocks. The wind and swell made it very difficult and dangerous to fish which did not help too much, most people seemed to be waiting for it to get better but with 3 days that was not a good tactic. The wind was so strong at times my lures were working themselves mid-air and the wind on my line was skipping my poppers.
The best I heard was that there was a big school feeding on herring at blue holes. This was second hand information.

Not too much to report back
Not too much to report back from Peaceful Bay. Managed to get 4 down at the blue holes, good size though. Saw 3 small schools but they werent too keen on the lures. Managed one from a school the rest were just out of the gutters.
Got a couple at the gap from a large school but that disappeared to the deep much to our disgust.
No luck from the rocks, live baited herring for 2 hours for nothing. The wind was doing us no favours. Still had a great weekend

Plenty of salmon around
Plenty of salmon around Albany. Fishing at sinker reef yesterday morning. Small schools of a couple of hundred or so on reef edges. Some looked decent sized. Standing on the reef edge they were only about <5m away. Spent hours chucking lures & mulies at them. Just werent interested. Very frustrating. Did get a couple of thumper Skippy though.

just spent the long weekend at posion creek where the salmon where a nuisance, caught and relased over 60 in 2 sessions, we were trying to get into the mulloway and big flathead but couldnt get our baits past the salmon. in the end gave up and started targeting them with lures and plastics at night on light gear which made for some good fun.

Did poison creek last Easter Paddy, what a great place. A lot of people forget what is on offer east of Esperance.
If the Salmon action was thick and fast there, then I'd be inclined to think they might be a bit late this season.

Take Fisheries Road until you get to the dirt road heading towards Israelite Bay and turn right into Poison Creek. It's past Cape Le Grand National Park and part of Cape Arid National Park. Awesome area but my next trip there will see me head past Israelite Bay towards the Cliffs where big Pink Snapper can be caught from the beach.

Hey Bluetonic Is Poison Creek 4WD only?
It had a look on the Google satellite and there looks to be some great fishing areas around there.

Hi Colin, My apologise, I
Hi Colin, My apologise, I haven't been on the site for some time.
Personally I would say Poison Creek is 4WD only, especially if you want to head over some of the rocky headlands looking for good ground.
Yeagarup is a great place to get a group with a few 4WD's. Once we hit the beach we normally travel back towards Augusta direction and then back up over the sand dunes in sheltered areas you can camp. If you look hard you will find areas behind the dunes especially set out by (I would imagine D.E.C.) for just this.
This place can be a real test on your 4WD skills to get out as you have a very high steep sand climb and and it often pays to wait until any vehicles in front of you make it, otherwise you will find yourself backing down again. Go there and you will know what I mean.
But as a weekend away with mates, this place can be absolutely fun.

Now that would be a bit of fun Colin
If they don't come in close you may have to head over to Rotto. There always seems to be a few good school there.

Just been speaking to the guys at Dunsborough Sports and Outdoors and they said there has been heaps of reports of small schools showing up on the west coast and a few in the bay but no large schools as yet. Pros netted a larger school at Eagle bay several days ago, around half a tonne. Wont be long now until we see some good numbers showing up. Cant wait.
