I've never been through the mouth there but I know it's gets pretty dicey. You'd want to make sure you know what your doing. Not sure why he attempted to tow them all the way in but I hope he gets compensated in any case. Has anyone had a similar experience when helping someone out and it ended up significantly costing you?

Back from
Back from Kalbari:
Geez it's really busy up there- All Caravan Parks are fully booked, turning away caravans who haven't booked a site.
Witness a few happenings: Two boats came to a mishap coming thru the rivermouth crossing.
Both boats ended up washed up onto the reef/rocks. Lucky all people escaped with a few scratches. Boats had to be dragged off reef by Sea Rescue.
: Drove out to the new Kalbarri Skywalk- well worth a visit, very well done. New road out there is brillant. Witnessed the first illegal base jumper from the Skywalk. Scared the shit out of us as he jumped, shook the walking platform. Balls of steel or just stupid!
Tangles was flatout with the Fishing Charters and Whale Watch- no shortage of money being spent up there.
Great few days away- still heaps of caravans and boats heading up on our drive back.

We were in Exmouth for the school holidays. It was school-holiday like in June, the couple of times I had to visit from Winderabandi, then the holidays....Police had to be called at the bakery. The staff were trying to get people to observe at least a semblance of some social distancing, but people just kept crushing in. Parties going on to the small hours, police called. My personal opinion, and I'll likely get flamed for this, is that the Bali Bogan crowd were looking for outlets for their often clueless behaviour. Internal tourism is great, up to a point, but you get a lot of people who will drag their selfish, often execrable behaviour all over the state, rather than export it. Kalbarri had it's share of this, too.
Of course, local businesses had a lot of lost ground to make up, and packed venues won't give them back all they lost. But it certainly helped. A friend has a large accommodation business in Kalbarri, had never been fully booked for June, July, and into early August, before. I told him what we were paying for a room at the Potshot, and he said he should have put his prices up, too.

Very much a bali crowd. I personally know a couple of families that spend the mid year school holidays in Bali every year and they all went to broome.

lol- Yep we used our pushbikes around town. Safer on the footpath down alongside the main street!

But it could just as easily refer to Kalbarri's main street. At least, as a treet, it isn't that long. The sudden stops and impulsive turns are the worry.

Looks like there's a bit more to the story about the boat mishap in Kalbarri last week:

Yep-There's a lot more to
Yep-There's a lot more to come from this from my understanding- like why didn't Sea Rescue put there boat in when first asked on the radio for assistance?

I wonder whether this guy
I wonder whether this guy said all good don't come out (to Sea Rescue) I'll tow him all the way in? If that was the case and in that scenario do Sea rescue have a responsibility to launch and lend assistance if there is a higher risk than normal? Be it swell, reef, failing light etc. I guess it's a judgment call on their part. Hopefully we hear more details.

Got to be a fair bit more to
Got to be a fair bit more to the story. Don't think too many skippers would feel comfortable towing another vessel through that mouth and highly doubt sea rescue would ask another vessel to do it. Way too many unknowns and half story's.
Big red flag right there.

We have towed a boat in
A few years back we were following a boat back in thru the river mouth when the steering broke on the other boat.
We quickly stopped and got a rope to him and towed him back out into clear water. Once we were all happy we towed him straight thru back to the sea rescue boat ramp with no issues.
It all happened that fast that he didn't get a chance to call sea rescue before we'd turned up. That river mouth is not the place where you will have even a few minutes to wait for assistance before your're in real trouble.
I wouldn't hesitate to do whatever i could to help someone that needed it and i hope that if i ever need help that others will feel the same way.

Rescue
the skipper of the bot that was towing the broken down boat was on 6pr yesterday asking for some legal advice from the legal guru on there, he said he was contacted by vmr and asked to perform the rescue as he was close by, he also suggested there was some kind of function on in town and the vmr boys may of had a few wines under their belt and that was the reason they hadn’t launched until after it had all gone wrong. I didn’t hear the full conversation on the radio but that was the gist of it and he was asking where he stood in regards to re couping out of pocket expenses.

yeah correct....That was the
yeah correct....That was the gist of it.
Stated he had spend a pile of cash on the boat with updated electronics and the likes and the boat insurance didnt covers his out of pocket.
The Fremantle VMR coordinator for Sea rescue phoned the station straight after stating he will do full investigation.

I remember when we first got
I remember when we first got into boats we were told that that you should only tow a boat as your last resort due to lack of insurance coverage if it all turns to poo.
By all means hang around and render assistance but leave the towing to Sea Rescue.

if u are asked by sea
if u are asked by sea rescue -or water police to tow - they can - and will compensate if there are costs, also your insurance should pay - and then recover from VMR /waterpolice- all rescues fall under police authority
main thing is to keep evidence - eg radiolog from VMR etc.
They must ask u directly to tow though eg " can u please tow the boat in" - not just say "render assistance" - that means they gave u authority -and u "work" for them at that time
this happens very seldomly where they will ask u to tow - specifically as this makes them liable for any costs/injuries , normally they ask u to render assistance until they get there
u do have the right to refuse the tow - but u must render assitance to preserve life - eg take them onboard at least untill another vessel arrives - worst case if u dont have space and theirs has sunk - u need to stay with them, while they tread water

Job Number
Until you get a job number from Water Police to attach a tow line to another vessel you are not covered by their insurance if things go pear shaped. Once you stick a tow line on, you are responsible for the other vessel and your own vessel.

Not required to rescue vessels
You are obligated, within reason, to save lives. This bloke said he was "instructed" (his words) to help. No, mate, that did not happen. You may have been requested to render assistance by VMR. You were not instructed to tow him in. You would never be instructed, ie, ordered to do so. So get that part out of the way.
Then it comes down to how far that you, as a good samaritan, are prepared to go. You can assist by taking them on your vessel. Once you undertake that tow, be careful. Personally, I'd have them on board my boat, a good towrope attached, then , if this goes to shit , the tow rope is being dropped. I have saved them, not obligated to save their vessel because I am not doing it for reward. In his case, apparently, it snapped. And he then tried to re-attach, which is when they both went over. I know we all want to do the best by our fellow man--well, most of us, I hope---but there is a limit to it. I know, everyone has 20/20 hindsight, whatever, but you need to always bear this in mind.
If it is safe to do so, in your opinion, and within the abilities of yourself and your vessel, go for it. I towed someone recently up at Exmouth. A 14ft quintrex, brush painted, of ancient lineage , with an old 2-stroke, stopped dead in front of me entering the marina, between the inner breakwater and the first pens. I coasted up alongside him, asked if he was OK, "no we just ran out of fuel" Only 100m short of destination Conditions were glass, we were inside, we just laughed and got him to throw me a rope, idled over to the ramp and let him coast in. The risk was extremely low. But you have to look at each circumstance individually.
I have also towed a 62 ft crayboat, with a 50 ft crayboat, 15 miles through a fresh southerly, into the river at Kalbarri, navigated all the moorings with him under tow, went up river and circled back to park him neatly on the end of the jetty, facing up into the wind, ready for the crane to lift his motor out. Now THAT was a tow job.

Towing under trying
Towing under trying conditions is definitely not as easy as it would seem. Very risky
