Personal Ban

Thats it I am putting my personal ban on fishing perth's water!

We went out to rhe barge west of rotto again today, only to sacrifice numrous paternoster rigs to the mongrel leather jackets. I am over it! back to reef fishing for till we get some reports sambos  are in..

Actually fished the bottom at heaps of spots (paternoster and driftbait), which all had good structure the whole day, pnly to return with nothing in the ice box,

What a barren waste land the ground is between ocean reef and rotto, this area here is where they need to have a fishing ban to get some regrowth happening for a few years for real,  the under size pinks and dhu's are few and far between in this area, and never even seen a black arse all in two solid days fishing, Mindarie will be the furthur most south i will be launching now for some time, 2 roks the most. Lancelin or ledge next.

I admit i have a museum piece of a sounder which works in the fishes favour, but i seldom return without a feed fishing north of perth. have they beeing doing secret nuclear testin in these waters or what?

At least my speciality species "wrasse" wont let me down for some entertainment, "go the wrasse"!! Haha!

Buy a decent sounder, there is lots of good ground in that area. With a good sounder you will be able to recognise it when with your present one you probably would drive straight over it.Even just a thickening or deepening of colour/grayline on black and white sounder will signal a change of bottom hardness can make a difference

Dude, you're on a fishing website and you're supporting a blanket ban on fishing...

Why would you want your grandkids catching fish?... That's just plain irresponsible... What about their kids? (that's sarcasm in case you missed it)

Over and out.

Agree with you 100% - there has to be some sort of control - i favour reduced bags personally - and i have had a personal ban in place for years - unfortunately imposed by the fish and my limited ability.

Not the same...

Ian reduced bag limits are very different to a blanket ban...

So actually you're not agreeing with them 100%... and that's not simply semantics...

Get the sounder!

Thu, 2008-10-09 14:25

For bottom fishies sounder and knowing how to use it is everything. The other one is to fish lighter than you think you need, you would be shocked at how light a lot of the guys on here who regularly catch good fish actually go. I don't bottom fish with any more than PE3 braid and 80lb leader. Yes you will lose a few, but that will be more than made up for with the bites you can feel and the shots you get.

My final advice is learn how to drive your GPS as much as your sounder. Finding fish is pointless if you can't line up a drift.

Also mix it up. DOn't just fish paternosters. EG - I took three other blokes out fishing on Saturday. the boat tally for the day was 2 dhuies, a good pinky, two mulloway, a heap of skippy and amberjack. Of those fish I caught all but 2 and I was deckie / skipper for most of the day. Why - different rig, and fishing lighter.

Sounds like my sentiments

Sounds like my sentiments too Simon. I havent fished heavier than 30lb last few times i've been out and even went 8lb last time. No paternosters on any :p Just octas and driftbait (which a few guys on here are quite fond of Laughing).

Much more fun way to fish even if you loose a few. It depends what the balance in between fun and food for a lot of people though. Also, I guess for some people, fun is skull dragging fish in using 80lb+ gear :p

Evidence?

Fri, 2008-10-10 12:21

Do you have anything to back up that claim tommo?
(that they (whichever fish "they" is) will become "EXTINCT" if we don't have blanket bans on them)

Until you can show me your evidence, no I "dont get that"

Tommo I suspect you don't really give a sit about us boaties getting shafted because you're missing out on it anyway... this ban doesn't affect you does it? - If it had have been implemented what would have changed for you?

Its hard to argue that a closed season won't lead to more fish being available outside it.

I'm not sure you can really turn up this evidence you hold so dear that there isn't a problem with the fishery.

I think the only valid discussion is what to do about it.

Interesting line of argument

Sat, 2008-10-11 09:22

Interesting comments till...

I think you're right that having a closed season would lead to more fish being available outside it, I'm not disputing that... in fact I'd be brave enough to say that if this "closed season" was extended to include the full year well then fish stocks would really improve... so would you "fishermen" like to see that happen? For the sake of these fish stocks?

I also think its quite normal to require evidence to change the status quo....

Yeah fair enough

It doesnt fully affect me ... but maybe it will in the future who knows ... everyone has different opinions but it seems as of late on this website you arent allowed to express your full and honest opinion without it getting shoved back in your face to the point of wondering to yourself why the f^&% did i even open my mouth ...

It isn't a 'doomsday prophecy' its reality.

Your backing up a guy who is clearly in the 90% bracket of fisherman. There is plenty of fish to be caught out there, you only have to look at the main guys on this site who nearly always come home with a good feed. The 10% fishos dont have fish jumping on there hooks, they have put in hundreds of hours and years of fishing to find good ground. I can tell you one thing they are certainly not going out in deep water with a f@#ked sounder and returning home crying there is no fish. Reduce the bag limits and review the whole thing(fishing industry)properly then if bans or closers are needed then so be it, don't cry for bans just because you can't catch a fish.

i dont even fish on a boat mate and i have some sort of common sense ... but when im a bit older lets say in about 10 years time when i eventually would like to invest in a boat  ... i would like to catch fish such as dhufish and snapper without them being just about all gone in the metro area ..

its about acting now for a sustainable future.

Fri, 2008-10-10 15:49

I would rather be in the NINTY % With tommo and Wrassemaster and enjoy my fishing than be a self righteous TOOl and bag anyone that begs to differ. And i didnt hear any body crying just stating their opinion.

90%?

Sat, 2008-10-11 09:32

So you think 90% of fisho's wanted the ban?
That's almost an oxymoron mate, a fisho who wants a fishing ban!
When you think about it UncleStu I'm sure you'll see that I'm not the one being a "self righteous TOOl"... I just enjoy fishing, and don't believe the doomsday prophets.

maybe we have reached the point of no returne with the v5 fish, lets face it,if we,that is all fiherman go out when the weather allows and knowingly target certain fish,v5 then the pressure on those particular fish is emmense. At the risk of many of you wanting to belt me in the mouth,I would totaly support a period of no fishing for certain types v5 as long as it was all,not just the recreationals, but the commercial interests too,at least while they are breeding.Foot in mouthjersey

Fri, 2008-10-10 18:14

Uncle stu you missed my point, this is a fishing site where people who put in the time and effort catch fish. I bagged him for saying the is no fish from rotto to oceanreef, then saying he is using a crap sounder. Of course there is no fish out there when you cant see them. Im not righteous or in the 10% club, but i do know that a good sounder is the most important piece of fish finding equipment on a boat. If you ask me the more people out there who cant catch fish the better for the stocks.
