does any of you expert fishos know what this thing is. caught around 1/2 dozen of these- one at night was at least double this one size. (another fisho on the beach told me whiting- but definately doesnt look like a whiting)- could be wrong though?

i wouldnt have a clue what it was- (agree with the spikes- soon found out after me first one - lil bastard!!!)
can you eat them- and if yes are they any good (just cause ill tell me brother not to throw them back if they are nice)

a good book to get is sea fishes of southern australia.its helped us identify lots of fish

its a spotted trumpeter.. u get them at rotto all the time. they annoying and they come in big school. dont tase good but make very good squid attractents if u cast em out un hooked and retrive slowly. also good ray bait

These fish had us looking up the books for a while. We used to catch a few off the beaches at Hopetoun, closest we could find was scavenger trumpeter. They really bite hard, makes you think you have something much bigger on the chew.

yer ive caught millions of them only thing ii ever found them good for was mully bait but apparently theyre not a bad crab bait either
