Wet Outing at Moore River Today

Wet Outing at Moore River Today

Much like Sherbs and UncleStu I decided to desert the wife and head out. The forcast was showers in the morning easing. I no sooner hit the road and the heavens opened up. No chance for the beach so I kept driving and hit Moore River. The water was pissing through under the bridge. I headed to Guilderton and picked up a few river prawns and a few beers. It was pissing down. The picture gives you some idea of the very good state of the river and should provide some incentives for those looking for a decent Mulloway when the weather settles. I will certainly be looking for an opportunity to hit the beach up there soon.

I found a nice secluded spot up river out of the wind. Plenty of rain though. Using light gear I had a lot of fun with the Bream. I released about a dozen under-sized critters and managed to keep 3 fish just over-size at about 28cms. 2 huge bust-offs kept me interested.

Apart from the bust-offs, my biggest problem was keeping a smoke dry and keeping the water out of my beer. All in all it was well worth the effort.

what can I say

Sat, 2009-08-22 21:38

It was the flapping arms that did me in lol.

Pretty go to get that many size ones Vince. There were snapper inside the sand bar when we were there. Think some big fishies snuck thru for a bit of a snack.

How Deap?

Sun, 2009-08-23 09:29

At the moment there seems to be enough water for a small boat to negotiate. There are other places up there to launch for ocean access.

Sounds good to me Stu.

The Missus doesn't mind a weekend away up there either. There are a couple of holiday homes we have used. Looking at the weather we seem to be headed for more rain so the mouth should stay open a while. Weekend after next looks promissing Stu.

That photo of the Moore

Sun, 2009-08-23 14:25

That photo of the Moore River mouth looks great. (although a bit wet)

We have not been up that way for more than 12yrs. Are there any places to camp besides the caravan park there? We have a popup camper or if we have to go serious 4x4 we have a tent.

We don't mind the van park idea it is just that we have heard that it is always booked out.

Caravan Park

Sun, 2009-08-23 14:32

I was up there yesterday (obviously) and I do seem to recall a sign saying the park was closed. It certainly didn't have many tenants. Maybe they are renovating for the spring rush, who knows, I may even be dreaming.

Guilderton is a fantastic little place. There are heaps of holiday homes available this time of year and I sent requests for quotes by email an hour ago. The homes have plenty of facilities and are well run. We take the pets with us and they love it! I am thinking the weekend after next. It depends on the quotes that come back and the missus of course. The weather looks promissing for that weekend.

Thanks for that Uncut and Callum.  I think that we just need to book at the Guilderton van park if we can and go no matter what the weather.  The boat usually seems to win out over the camper every good weekend.  This way we can camp and fishSmile do we need a river fishing licence for the Moore River Bream?

Shooting the Moore mouth

Sun, 2009-08-23 14:41

would not advise anyone trying it....always a secondary sandbar in the surf line.
My old man tried it 10 years ago or so when there was heaps more channel....in a 14ft tnnie he made it out ok, but coming back in he got barreled....
lost everything out of the boat that didnt float or didnt get washed back onto the beach.
funny as

sounds like a great day mate....

did you see the pinks inside the sand bar jodie????

Sounds like a bit of fun apart from the rain Vince

That river mouth does look very tempting for some good mulloway fishing.

Interested in a run up that way?

Sun, 2009-08-23 14:45

As per previous posts I am looking at the next couple of weeks for a run up there. Are you interested? I haven't spoken to Sherbs or Stu yet as I am waiting on home quotes. I recon it could be the GO.

Don't ever try and get a boat, even a tinny through the mouth. I have a place up at Moore River and have seen many a poor fool come unstuck trying over the years. You can easily launch further North near the lighthouse. Just be careful there are a few rocks around from before the groine gave way and make sure you have a 4WD. On a good day easy to get a tinny out to the first reefs and heaps of good fishing for Dhuies, baldies etc.
