SkipJack Tuna

SkipJack Tuna

Headed out on Saturday chasing some marlin. We got our first strike 20 minutes into the troll, screaming drag for about two seconds but unfortunately no hook-up. Took another four hours before we got another hit. I saw it come up and it just seemed to cruise on to the lure and then headed deep, deep, deep. The drag was preset to 8kgs and didn't take to long to decide to go into overstrike. Affer about three minutes it was about to spool the Penn International so we decided we had to change the angle and chase it. At some point it spat the hook and that was it. I can only guess the weight about about 250kg+. Awesome fun but disapointing all the same. About an hour before we were due to head in we saw a massive school of tuna and birds working so off we went to try and nail some yellow fin. We couldn't get through the skipjack tuna. They were thick and hungry. After stopping to fight a fish we would then have to get up to 18-20 knots to catch up to the school and a couple of times we got double hook-ups when trying to catch the school. Nothing like a rod and reel going nuts when you are doing 18 knots. We ended up with 11 tuna in 60 minutes, so take out the travelling time to catch the school after each fish it was pretty much instant hook-ups when we got to them. As is the way here we kept them and gave them away to the less fortunate people that live amongst us. They were all extremely grateful.

Come on over

Mon, 2010-06-28 16:34

You, Andy, anyone is welcome to come over. Accomodation can be sorted. All too easy.

Agree mate they are great fun on the light gear. The problem is they school up with the yellow fin and knowing my luck I'll put the 4kg gear out on the troll and hook a 30kg YFT. Say goodbye to $100 of braid and whatever lure I had on.

Love that shot soupster, where abouts are you located?  Pretty sheltered little bay there.

Hey Ben. I'm a WA boy but I moved to Pohnpei, Micronesia in Jan for the next two (maybe three) years with my job in the Navy. The photo was taken at our dock where we live, about a mile and a half up the the river. It's an awesome spot the fishing variety is fantastic. I'll be putting mudcrab pots into those mangroves behind in the photo very soon, doing a cray dive after work tomorrow and then a bit of trolling for marlin/yellow fin as soon as I'm out of the water. Then some jigging/popping on Sat. Love it here.

Yeah, living it up, whilst his son is here trying to steal my daughter away...hahaha.

Post some tuna back....well, Andy loves it.

Pick it up too mate, try 21 knots - Tills fav speed.  You thought a 250kg marlin could spool you quick.

Hope you get one of those big stick faces soon...we want in water shots too so have the camera at the ready.

Cheers Pete
