My first Red
Submitted by Simon C on Tue, 2009-02-10 19:07
Caught of tantabiddi last week in the middle of a session that saw a heap of Pearlies and Gold Bands come in off one drift. Big thanks to a few people for pointing us in the right direction. That and a good sounder and I had my first ever Red Emperor at 18lb. Suffice to say there was a heap of yahooing and handshaking as it was a boat goal to land a big red and something we have not come close to in 4 trips up north.

Well done Simon. Excellent fish.
Would have looked great materialising out of the depths under the boat.
Did you drop any jigs down up there?

yeah john, very excited as I had no idea what I was on to as it did not fight much but weighed a lot I was thinking cod, and then this came in with a gold band snapper on the other dropper and I was stoked. We did a bit of jigging and picked up some rankins, but the 20knot winds made it way too hard in 100m.

FUnny isn't it Jay. I think
FUnny isn't it Jay. I think for me it comes down to the old man who used to go on reef trips with mates when I was a young fella and would always talk about the big reds they caught and I have spent 20 years fishing just trying to catch a little one. Having said that we did one days bottom fishing in 10 days and that was purely to try and get a red, so now that I have done it it would take a lot to get me to drop in 100 meters again.
