great white encounter.

great white encounter.

howling cold easterly hammered geo bay toaday, all day as well, headed out a cple close in spots, got: thumping harly, cple breaksea and small dhuie(released) , just when it was all quiet out of nowhere a massive great white came at us, this massive thing was angro, broke the surface swam around us, hovered under our boat, at which time we lifted the motor and pulled the sea anchor, then cple minutes later, he came straight at us, side on, i mean he had a wake, deffinately great white, we thought he was gonna smack straight into us,but he tilted and went under the boat, he would of gone estimated 5.5-6metre easy, my boat is 7metre and he looked just as big directly under us a cple metres, we got the hell outta there.

sorry no pic but we didnt really have much time to play with a cple more mins i reckon he would of tried attacking.

spooked us all out. but we laugh about it now

running down my legs

Sun, 2008-08-10 19:14

Hubbie went out to shelf at Leeman, fishing by himself, about 3 years ago, water depth about 46metres on top of bank, funny sort of day, strong tide really eerie, drifting fast, was there a hour then this great white came, saw him on the surface, swam up to and past boat, round the bow then swam around to the stern, started motor left it idling (Dad always did that when whales come around in Geograph Bay), came on side and gave me the eye, then disappeared, I fished all day standing in the middle of the boat, then moved to 55 metres, carried on fishing with my 15kg game rod with 9" albie reel with 30lb line on, hooked a big fish felt like sambo, as current was so strong, started winding maybe 10-12 metres, the line went so heavy, pulled and pulled, held drag, snapped 6" off of rod & at least 30 metres of line. my boat 18', shark would have been 18' also.  I think Mr Great White came back for a feed. Packed up and headed home. Bloody scary

They usually like chewing on

Sun, 2008-08-10 19:56

They usually like chewing on stainless props, I have seen a Mako bite a Sambo in half and then come back and attack the stainless swim ladder. 5m one around the boat would scare the shit out of me, JAWS movie comes to mind with it bitting the stern off.

They don't scare me -

Mon, 2008-08-11 14:51

they bloody terrify me. I was quite quite a keen skin diver in my early teens and used to go north quite often with a mate and and his older brother. We were north of Jurien in late 1967 chasing crays and whatever else we could find. At one spot the mates brother decided not to come in and sat in the Landrover with a beer. It was not until we got out he told us the reason he he opted out was Bob Bartle had been taken in the same spot some weeks earlier. It took a another few years but i eventually gave it up as my imagination got stronger and bloody Spielberg released Jaws.

back of my mind!

Mon, 2008-08-11 15:15

I must admit, I'm a keen diver but big predatory sharks have always been in the back of my mind. Since I got a  Shark Shield Freedom 7 I dive without any hesitance....a good feeling!

Mon, 2008-08-11 15:26

Do you think the shild would stop a shark coming in for a chew ,if the shark was dead set on you for lunch. are they that good.

dunno mate

Mon, 2008-08-11 15:38

not sure, i,ve dived not far from where we were fishing, and there,s also a seal colony close by, hes got plenty of food, but at the rate this thing was moving,i think he,s bite u in half before the electric shock bothered him.

lol no evil eye colin, but he was deffinately weighing his attack options ,maybe we were a tad bigger.tell u what though makes you think twice about goin in for a dip seeing one of thse things,a lot more intimidating than a mako .
