This brought me to tears

This brought me to tears

This photo of a wild Koala getting a drink from the devestation of the Victorian Bush Fires, I cried. Look at the koalas paw, holding on to the volunteer fire fighter. Makes our problems seem nothing compared to the horrible tradegies happening in Victoria.   This was taken from the Perthnow site.

PS  There is a video of David Tree giving Sam the Koala 3 bottles of water, she now is in care.  The video is on perthnow site "Koala has a drink of water"

That's Wonderful Roberta

I can truly understand why that brought you to tears!

Like so many others, it's hard to put into words what the worst peacetime devistation in Australia's history means to us. Shock, upset, disbelief, empty 'guttedness', helplessness. All of these seem not enough.

I spent 5 years in WA's Voluntary Bush Fire Brigade. At it's worst, it was fighting fires in 45 degree (Celcius) heat for 24 hours. Mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. Blasted by radient heat, limbs beyond aching, trying to sustain life saving concentration and sustaining a preparidness to adapt to changing situations. Fortunately, on the watch I was involved in, we never lost a life. 'Just' some stock, a few houses and infastructure (perimiter fencing, out buildings and so on).

I can only imagine (and respect with awe) what our wonderful (Eastern States) CFA men and women are (and have) going (gone) through.

NOTHING in WA would (and could) compare to the incredible and wide spread devastation our fellow Australians have sufferred and experienced.

I was living in Melbourne when Ash Wednesay came, lived in Cranbourne & the embers (ash) were falling in my backyard, had the dogs, cats, kids & 1st hubbie and I all ready to go, but it stoped 11 klms north of us.  Terrible tradegy.  Some parts of Cockatoo after the devestation, when they were cleaning up found glass chunks, the fire was so intense that the sand turned to glass. People just opened the gates to the paddocks and let their livestock/horses etc out.  Apparently a lot of livestock survived but it was pretty scary driving around with all the animals wild & domestic.

was your fire fighting experience in mount barker?   and do you think that controlled burning to reduce the fuel level is an efficient way of reducing the risk?   I know it is a very controversial issue, although seeing that incredible inferno in Vic, I guess nothing was going to stop those fires.

It is only a matter of time

Wed, 2009-02-11 07:17

before we cop a big one down our way. I live in a Special Rural area up above Dunsborough - my place is pretty clear or will be until all my plantings grow but around me there are a lot of houses with thick bush right up to the house. Some of these places are in dead end roads and you would not have a snowballs chance in hell of getting out in a fire. Apparently the Shire of Busselton are going to crack down on fire hazards - hopefully before the worst happens. I am all in favour of prescribed burning and bugger the Greens.

Totally agree 7739ian

The terrible tradegy that happened in Cockatoo (vic) could have been maybe a little bit less painfull if the land owners could have cleared and trimmed their trees on their 10 acre + properties but the bloody greens stopped them and look what happened (this allcome out in the inquest Vic held).  Tried to explain to Bob that in Victoria (had 20yrs there) the bush is totally different to the bush here, it seemed a lot thicker over there then here.  I know if I owned a 10 acre property, I'd trim the trees and clean up a 100 meter circle around the house, and if the greens tried to stop me, I dont think I'd be responsible for my reply or actions towards them.

fires

Wed, 2009-02-11 11:02

Yeah, I support prescribed 'cool' burns too however no amount of fire control will ever combat the maliciousness of arson.  Bridgetown was arson, Kings Park was arson and this Victorian tragedy is arson too, some relit as the fire brigades put them out.

No chance against that.

Funny thing is

Wed, 2009-02-11 12:03

that i have some massive gums along an internal laneway on my block - these were there when i bought what was otherwise a bare paddock. I chopped a couple of sick ones down and was threatened with $5000 fine - apparently i was " improving my view" and i live in a "LANDSCAPE PRESERVATION ZONE". The fact that the trees are about 30m from my house and linked to overgrown bush next door makes them a real fire risk to my house, apart from the 10-20kg branches they drop. But the Brownshirts at the Shire are watching me - so if a fire gets loose and these trees cause a problem i am sure the shiny arses in the shire will come round to help - not. Common sense seems to be lacking in a lot of local bylaws.
