Which Reel
Submitted by roganjosh on Thu, 2011-04-14 08:51
Hi Everyone,
I need some advice on what reel to go for. I have a nice 6'3" jigging rod, but I need to match a reel to. Most of th fishing will be around Coral Bay / Exmouth chasing Spango's etc. These are the reel I cant decide between:
Daiwa Saltist
Shimano Saragosa
Shimano Twin Power
Daiwa Catalina ( bit more expensive )
Interested in knowing what others think or have used themselves.

Don't bother with a twin
Don't bother with a twin power unless it is SW model. Go a Sol4000 (made in japan)

Catalina is a bit old to bother with any more. Saltist is too fast, for jigging the alternative is the emblem (maybe???P).
I'd probably pick the gosa from that bunch. I have a tp 5k for casting, and its great, but not for jigging.

saltist
i have 2 daiwa saltist 30H overheads and they are awesome reels.
they are small and lightweight yet the retrieve is so large.
the only thing you have to do when you buy one is upgrade the drag washers to carbontex (which bluewater or any reel servicer can do). once that has been done your set.
in my opinion these reels are unstoppable, i live up north and i use them for all sorts of bottom fishing and havent been stopped yet!

Thanks for the reply guys,
After all he comments I would have to aggree that the Gosa ( maybe 18000 ) might be the go.
What are others using from a tinny inside the reef at Coral Bay. What reels?

Personally I find the 18000
Personally I find the 18000 is just too much for most of the work I thought I would do with it....especially demersals.
Outside the reef in the 80m mark trying to haul reds off the sharks it was ok, but still I personally wish I had got a much smaller reel (only running PE6 on the gosa) and only run PE4 or 5. Personally I use my JM PE4 OH far far more as it is a LOT more managable.
Only reason I will ever get my gosa out the shed now a days is if I think I am going to have some fun with some sambo's....wasted combo if you ask me.
just my 2 cents

Hey WADray,
Thanks for your 2 cents. I do agree. If I am out in the deep I have 2 Avet LX O/H. Just looking for something inside. Dont know what size or brand?

To help this process
what line class is the rod? Also will you be jigging metals or plastics?

This particular rod is rated heavy at PE5, but prime excuse to get another. I ahve previously been on the Mauds side in the bay using an older Penn Slammer 560 and seriously got blown away by the Spangled. Was hoping to be able to run maybe 30lb on the reel in a spin. I also use a SX Avet with 30Lb as an o/h option.

Personally my replacement
Personally my replacement will be a saltiga 4500z running PE3 maybe PE4 on something like a demon blood...I will replace the drag washers and go from there...
Otherwise I found the jigging master PE4 OH was bloody brilliant for stopping the spangled inside the reef, even pulled up a few of the little bronzies that float about inside south passage.

Wow......an 18000 size reel
Wow......an 18000 size reel for inside jig work!!!!! You will hate it. Try a 6000 size with pe4, maybe 8000 on a heavier rod with pe5 but it will be a skull dragged!
PE3 would be my preference for under 70 m jig work.

18k is a bit OTT annd 6'3" is very long for a PE5 jigger.
My PE4 jigger is just 5'2" and I use a talica TAC8 on that.

my opinion would be the saragosa i use my 18000 matched to a 6 foot fin nor 80lb jigging rod and these reels ive found ar bulletproof . Never failed me from huge rays to sharks even i use 50lb suffix braid and thats all i use every where when hunting mullas to sharks when on shore i use a 12ft 18kg rated surf rod and still casts brilliant.
to fish or not to fish is that even an option?

Seems a bit odd why you'd put 30lb on a big reel with a PE5 rod though? Would make sense going a little heavier in the braid to match the outfit. You can always fish it lighter anyways, but you have more stopping power if needed and a better balanced outfit.

All very good points. I also have a 8000 Sustain with a Ugly Stick Bluewater Jig Spin. I just have this heavier Jig rod and was trying to match a suitable reel to it.
Also how often would you use say a 3500 or 4000 reel and what sort of fishing are you using it for, or is a 4500 more versitile.

I use a 4000 sustain running
I use a 4000 sustain running 30lb over a jig force 1.5 - 3 for all my demersal jigging out to 70 ish meters
keen on something lighter too.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

i caught a heap of good sized fish last week using a....
saltiga game 3500 with 35lb braid. I used it 95% of the week and never was beaten by a fish, only one or two lost rigs to the sea bottom. That reel is my new favourite - it blew my sox off how well it went on some good sized fish :)
Im not suggesting you go sambo jigging with it however hahaha but as far as pinkies, dhuies, baldchin etc I was stoked how well it went.
Gooooone Fishin!
