Submitted by steve434 on Tue, 2025-04-22 18:37
Hello,
can anyone please let me know where I can buy maggots for bait in Perth, I haven't got the time anymore to breed the myself, they make the best herring bait for when I head out fishing with the kids, any advice is appreciated.

Fogo?
Last week my Fogo bin, with fish frames and cray heads making choice contribution, would've been a gold mine for you. Not planned, but fat maggots in abundance crawling up the insides of the bin..

If you can get them now only
If you can get them now only frozen ones. I agree with you about them being great bait. Herring and gars would go nuts .

meal worms
The last place to sell maggots/gents was Joe Pullela's tackle store, long gone now.
Small meal worms worked for me also, can usually get them from specialist bird places, and some pet stores.

Pollard in a big berlay cage with baitchaser rig and
pieces of fresh prawn has always caught me heaps of herring, gardies etc. Throw hand fulls of pollard in water out as far as you can before starting fishing the herring will come

In Sth Aust.....
we call them 'gents' dont know why
an excellent bait for gar is gar flesh. Sacrifice the first smaller one and you should do very well.

Health Dept banned commercial production in WA
Have to grow your own but not difficult .....just a bit smelly, when they get mature they leave the carcus so just suspend it over damp bran as this scours them clean

best to use......
fish frames as the 'food', not red meat (unless your collecting from road kill)

My Pops method
Leave fish scraps to get fly blown for half a day on about 6 layers of newspaper.
Wrap up tight and place into a 4ltr ice cream bucket that's half full of pollard.
Put ice cream bucket into a tall white bucket (same as the ones you take fishing) with mesh over the top to breath.
Wogs thicken up eating the newspaper through to the pollard.

That's the same method I used
That's the same method I used as a kid. Mum didn't like them put in the fridge tho.
I remember mum asking me where I kept them before going fishing and when I told her she freaked

A good recipe, my attempt just failed, think they died because of the cold, shall try again.

Another method
Found this video which looks like a pretty reasonable way. Seems to keep things fairly clean and tidy.

I've used them for herring
I've used them for herring and gars very successfully but they were grown by others. I also used to use them for trout in streams as a kid in Victoria and they were dynamite for them too. I guess things die in trees etc. so they are used to them dropping into the water.
