What's the weirdest thing you've used for bait/lure etc and have caught?

A few years back on a night
A few years back on a night charter off hillaries, nothin was being caught after several drops and the skipper started cooken up some snaggas so I asked for one, half cooked, put it on a 3 gang for a bit of a laugh amongst me pissed mates and caught a slimey mack, used that for bait and nuthin else got caught all night, we all got fugn pissed tho, I was suprised this was allowed on a charter now thinkin about it, would ave been easy for a man over board that night.
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Red rag
Used to tie a piece of red rag on to a 10/0 hook on cord line to troll for tuna, had better results with that than the Halco tuna lures and big spoons that you could buy then.

Out with old farts
daughter had the biscuit out and towing her around in one of the bays at the back of GI. Stopped for lunch, old fart looked down into the very clear water (has he always does) saw a school of sand whiting (big) pulled out Polish sausage from his sandwich baited the hook and off we went, got a nice feed of big whiting for tea.
Old fart was out fishing with friends many years ago and for a joke told his friends wife that he always caught whiting with tomato, took out some tomato in the salad she had made, sat all afternoon fishing with bits of tomato on her hook, you guessed she didn't catch anything hahaah

Ben this stretch of beach where
you can get in, I steered the boat and old fart guided me in through the reef, you can only do it on a clear day, see the reef (good break in it on high tide,) but there is a nice stretch that runs along the beach where you can tow somebody, and plenty of whiting in there, as not many people can get in. Had to lift the leg of the motor as old farts motor has a long leg on it. Don't ask me the name of that stretch of beach, more the southern end.

Cigarette
I was fishing the bremer bay estuary around ten years ago. We ran out of bait, so I decided to use an old cigarette butt. The water was so clear we could actually see the fish attacking it. I ended up catching two leather jackets and a king george, for some strange reason I have never tried it again it seemed to go off.
Also I spent hours in Thailand trying to catch tin foil barbs 40cm+ with prawn and even though there were thousands around they wouldnt even sniff the bait when it had a hook in it, but if you threw a loose piece in they would smash it almost before it hit the water. After hours of patience and no luck i noticed half a watermelon drifting down stream, the tin foils were absoloutley smashing it. I quickly ran into the hotels kitchen an demanded they sell me some watermelon. They ended up giving it to me and I smashed 4 in 10 minutes, giddy up.

White rag
tied to a hook poked through the back end. Trolled off new Plymouth in NX and caught more Kahawai (Australian Salmon) than any lures we used. Some Kiwi will remember the plastic white lure with 2 hooks sort of bolted on. Well the rag killed them.

Homemade Barra fly
Used to see heaps of barra sitting under the Eii wharf with their heads down and tails up, stationary. We had a roll of Jinkai 80lb leader, a 6/0 SL12 and a bit of frayed white rope. We cut a few bits off and tied it to the hook We dropped it in and let it sink about 2m, jigged once and Caught an est. 80cm barra first go!!!
We also regularly discard our BBQ leftovers at the end of the Parker Point wharf, the big Golden's come from nowhere to devour the scraps!!
nana nana nana nana fishing!!!

Dunno if this counts, but
Dunno if this counts, but after a few bites in the river I was reeling in to bait up again and my line caught some old line which had obviously been left there a while ago. When I got the line in, I started pulling on the old stuff to get it out, it started to get heavier, and when I got it in there was a solid flathead on it which a lure in its mouth.
Went home with a flathead and a lure which was guaranteed to work
