Sambos - Knifes/searocks/SWlab slim jigs/anything if theres alot around :P

Dhuies/Snapper - Bucktail jigs or smaller searocks

Pelagics - had good sucess on knife jigs up north, as small searocks for mackies.

I don't suppose anyone knows

I don't suppose anyone knows what jigs to use up north and what jig methods?

Should I bring the jig all the way to the surface? Mackies often hit sinkers close to the boat when I bring the line in to re bait, so I guess that would be when they'd hit a jig.

White leadhead

Tue, 2006-10-17 22:35

No need for elaborate jigs for mack's (all types) up north Jay. The humble white leadhead jig cast and retrieved flat out through a berley trail or working birds will break your mackie/jig duck.

Also bait it with a half mulie and drop it to the bottom for coral trout etc. If you get a hit and don't hook up, crank the jig to the top for a chance at hooking macks/trevs etc.

CompassRose I'm with you big

CompassRose
I'm with you big John, the old leadheads have worked for me for over 25 years ...long before it became trendy- & got fancy .
The berley is usually the key + the delivery to the right target area & species .
Up north friends tell me they just get a white coles bag & wrap it in the lead size required ...simply using trace line to attach a hook & off ya go.

Cheers
Jeff

Well....like every other

Well....like every other fish each lure choices reflects on whether the fish lives and feed. Bottom feeders or dermersals will not travel off the bottom to hit a high speed jig so best to slow it down and use a jig with alot of action and that flutters a bit, so you are maximising the lure's action in the strike zone.

Its like chasing rankins with skirts.......you would rather use a deep diver for that.

Long skinny jigs are for

Tue, 2006-10-17 21:29

Long skinny jigs are for high speed erractic work and used to cover alot of water.

Shorter, thicker and more bottom weighted jigs are slower, more fluttering type jig for working near the bottom.

Micheal I suggest you, if possible, drop into Oceanside and we can show you which is which and the ins and outs, etc etc.

Jay, I haven't jigged a mack, but am told they are one of the easiest to hook up on, once you find them that is.

Just crank as fast as you can!

For the jigs I suggested

Wed, 2006-10-18 21:20

For the jigs I suggested originally ie local bottom fish & sambo's I use 1m of 80-120lb Jinkai trace line (depending), smaller the jig the lighter my trace line and the hooks that come with the jigs I mentioned are suitable.....back up swinging hooks to have on hand are 2/0,3/0,4/0

Cheers

Leader

Sun, 2006-10-22 02:09

I tie a 3 m leader (120 lb)to my braid with a bimini GT knot and like the longer leader so the knot hits the rod tip to alert you that your jig is about to come flying out of the water if you give it another big rip , but thats just me ????

Sea rocks are good lures, get a 200, 300 ,and 400g red head , put owner 10h splits on it with the 200lb rings and 5/0 to 7/0 assist hook ( all owner)( I like the longer assist ) and get a pair of DUO pliers from Bluewater to work the rings properly a bit $$$ but worth every cent , they even cut braid , I got a pair and they open 11h splits with ease and cuts all mono/ leaders to 120 lb and braid from 6lb to 80 lb ( thats all the braids I have 6,8,10,14,20,30,50,60,65,80)
