MIndarie is good for the kids

I know its a bit of a drive but we caught heaps of herring at the first reef (Quinns reef) a couple of weeks back. Its well protected from swell so good for the kids.

Burley is the key.

I usually drop anchor about 50 - 100m inside the reef on a sandy patch in say 3m of water. Drop the burley bucket over the edge and cast well back as the blowies will swarm right under the boat / burley pot whilst the herring will stay back a bit.

We used simple burley blobs as well.

If they get tired of the herring you can run to say 100 - 200m west of the marina rockwall and drift out from there and usually find a few whiting without having to head too far offshore with the kids on their first time.

Good luck Dave.

Post some pics of your fella's first boat fish.

Dont forget squid

Dont forget squid ;) Dont get the acrobatics of the herring, but can be pretty cool for kids seeing the squid squirm around, ink and change colour :p. Tasty too :D

For LB, is fairly easy to get a small squid jig, dangle under a float, then cast out and wait, so kids can still do it. Squid spikes work well too.

Top end of GI or south side

Top end of GI or south side of Carnac.  As Andy said, a little burley and you should have the herring swarming.

Once a feed of herring is onboard, head to east side of carnac and drift the shallow weed for an entree of squid.

Cheers Pete
