Video Editing Software
G'day Piscator, welcome to fishwrecked.

I use windows movie maker, very simple to use. All you really have to do is import your video. A heap of snippets will come up, select the ones you wish to put in the video and goto the tools option to add some effects and text.
It is probably the most simplest video editer out there at the moment. Other editing software gets pretty complicated very easily, so I just stick with the basics and use the windows one. It takes a little bit to get the hang of, but after playing around with it for an hour or two it gets a hell of a lot easier.
Here is a link to a windows site which gives you a few demonstrations on how to make your editing look a bit sweeter.

If you need any help, feel free to ask.
Cheers,
Adam

Moviemaker for me too.
Yeah Piscator, I'm same as Adam, all my vids have been cut using moviemaker. Once you suss it out it becomes pretty easy and relatively fool proof.

Movie Maker
I use movie maker as well. Sometimes it feels as if it's a bit too basic but there are heaps of downloads you can get for it that make it a bit more interesting.
There's also a pretty awesome site to help with Movie Maker;
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Index.aspx
It has forums where you can ask questions about the program which is cool.

Movie maker sound
Hey Tapout, there is a small icon to the left of the little microphone that you click on and adjust the balance between the music overdub and the underlying movie audio. Hope that helps mate.

No Worries Tapout
Hopefully I can get a few minutes of good footage of my last Dhuie and Snapper from my mate Adam's camera, should be awesome. I knew it was a Dhuie so kept saying that I wasn't going to call it to make sure I didn;t jinx myself. Will have to make sure the audio dub hides all that crapola talk when I cut the movie. (Hehehe)

Select the clip you want to get rid of the background sound and click on clip>audio>mute.

Update!
Video editing, hardworking job! I use pinnacle studio 9.4 for acquisition form miniDV and converting to mpg2, after I work with several programs, such as the same pinnacle studio, ulead video studio and sony vegas. They have different qualities and sometimes depends on what you're tryn'. Anyway, after doing my clips in mpg2, I use a diffrent authoring (DVD maker) program, useful and simple ulead movie factory or sony DVD architet. Pinnacle doesn't make this job fine. The best program for editing is adobe premiere but quite difficult to use, anyway the results you obtained is given from the facility you use the program. I think that movie maker is very simple but the standard is quite scarce. The soundtrack is another important thing, freeplay music and smartsound software are necessary for dont crash with copyrights...
Anyway I have a question: what kind of underwater case do you use in underwater footage??
thanks, bye

Kahuna did you get the soundtrack music from freeplaymusic.com? If so, what genre/feel/category was the music from the GT movies from? I liked that style and I'm trying to find something similar.

Kahuna,
Agree with you on the editing part - a long and time consuming job but in the end it is all worth it.
For the underwater footage I use an Ikelite housing. There are heaps around but I went wih them cos I have used them before and trust their stuff.
