Trolling combo?
Submitted by SPESS on Mon, 2007-02-12 15:40
Ok boys looking at getting another trolling outfit. Something in the 15kg range. Running a tiagra and t-curve roller tip now but its spooled with 30lb for the bigger boys when i was up in broome. Just wont something alittle cheaper to handle a few toooona to spanish mackies in the metro. Id rather keep the tiagra with 30lb and wont something for around $500 to $800 mark as it wont get used alot. Rod and reel here boys, fire away! Cheeeeeers Chris.

My place of purchase will be oceanside, but i love to hear from some people about what they've got. Even if you have something in the cheaper side that works for you. Just keen for some preferences!

You guys must all be rich
You guys must all be rich the amount you all spend on fishing gear lol. I use a Penn 330GTI combo for $185 and have caught heaps of mackies and decent Tuna on it with no problems. Best allround combo for the price I recon. But its probably too cheap for most peoples liking i would think.

Yeah i got one of those and
Yeah i got one of those and hooked up with a big mackie at broome and it had smoke coming out of the drag washers halfway through the fight! Didnt give in though the mackie was landed but i replaced the washers and retired it to abit of bottom bouncing, still works. But want something alittle more reliable this time.

Shimano tyrnos 30 with a
Shimano tyrnos 30 with a 15kg backbone. Good trolling outfit. TLD 20,25.
If your only after tuna and mackies any of these reels will handle them and for around $300 -$350 not bad value.
I have 2 okuma TG30 2 speeds, 2 tyrnos, tld 20 and 25 and am yet to be spooled. I have landed yellowfin to 10kg and albacore to 15kg. Have used Tiagra 30s and no probs with wahoo to 20kg. The only time i use 24kg gear is when chasing Marlin or sharks so any of these will be ok.
It all comes down to how much you want to spend as we all know the more you pay the better quality the gear.

Tyrnos 30
Only ever heard good things about them, it will be the next on my list to get as I need a mid range combo for trolling, probably spool it with 10kg thou as my tld50 has 15kg.

Go the Daiwa SLD 20 or 30
If you want a good quality reel you cant go past the Daiwa SLD reels. Ally frame and side plate and twin disc drag.
You wont get a better reel for the price.

Yep would have to agree with
Yep would have to agree with Bouttime for a cheap trolling outfit TLD 20/25 with a shimarno backbone or one of the shimarno tipan series youll be looking at about $300 or less.Could even use a penn 975 or shimarno calcutta 700 matched with a wilson live fibre.

I can second the Sealine
I can second the Sealine SLD30 or 30. All metal, dual drag setup with awesome graphite fibre drag washers. As for star drag reels.... too many to choose from out there. Okuma Titus Golds are worth considering nowadays as they have improved significantly.
Other Penns worth considering are the Grah-lite, formerly Formula. 20 and 30's, available in single or 2 spd.
I'll be getting a 10-15kg trolling outfit as well as I have far too many spinning gears. Mine total collection of overheads atm is just 2....

My choice...
I reckon a Penn Formula™ 15LD with a Shimano BB is a great combo for the price. Would definitely get it for under $500

Penn
Yeah I got the Penn "Formula" 2 speed and spooled it with 10kg. Holds about 500m which is a good thing and matched it to a live fibre rod. Combo looks and feels gold but just gotta get out there and give it a real test. I will be abloe to in less than a month :)))))))
EXMOUTH here I come!!!!
Cheers
