Transducer rooster tail
Submitted by big john on Fri, 2014-03-14 21:11
About to fit a 1kw furuno transducer with the airmar stainless transom bracket, looks huge compared to my 600w job.
Has anyone had any rooster tail issues with these larger transom mounted transducers?

Mine has a bit of a rooster
Mine has a bit of a rooster tail BJ but nothing that interferes with anything else. Never been happy with the placement though as it reads very well up until I hit 10knots and then anything faster it drops out (unless I am doing a big donut port or starboard). Have moved it a few times down and tilted forward but it is what it is for me anyway. So to save the mucking around I put the p79 shoot thru in and use it as the primary (great at all speeds) and then switch to the 1kw when in deeper water if I have to....cover both bases that way by swapping one cable.
I reckon if you have a clear run with no interference from intakes, pickups etc etc you will be good, I have a few all over the place and think disrupted flow is the issue for me.

Yes , I have the 1kw transducer and matching rooster tail.
Reads well though.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I'm about to buy a 587 with a 1kw tranny. My question is, does the rooster tail really matter?

I have the same tranny BJ
I have the same tranny BJ and it does throw a little bit of water but nothing worth worrying about. As I've said before I look forward when driving the boat ;) But seriously It's not that noticable and I get awesome bottom readings.

Mine used to throw a bit of water up into the air inlet of the cowling when going over 20 knots. Have now got a plate welded over the top of the tranducer to deflect the water.
As for the performance I can read the bottom at any speed.

Mine threw a rooster tail
Mine threw a rooster tail but alot of the water went over the motor. So i took my boat down to Chivers and they fabricated a defector plate to mount just above it which made a difference, they did a really preofessional job.

Rooster tail is usually due
Rooster tail is usually due to being mounted a tad too low. That being said if your getting good readings I would probably leave it. The rooster tail is only a problem if the motor sucks in any spray into the intake, I'm about to put a plate over the top of my tranny to prevent this. structure scan tranny also used to have a tail, raised it about 5mm and it stopped it and still get good readings.
