trailer wheel bearing grease??

What grease are you using and do you recommend it?
I have been using that blue castrol stuff in the tube from MTP.
Found it to be rubbish.
Any heat at all and it melts out. ( as in a 40 deg day and a short tow to the ramp)
Looking for something with better heat resistance.
Cheers

Good question.
I've asked this at a few bearing/mechanic/trailer part places, and I've got the same answer every time : marine grease is what should be used in boat trailer bearings.
from a dinghy, to a tri-axle 4 tonne boat, even if you have to travel 2000kms before your bearings get submerged into salt water, a marine grease is a better than a HTB for this application.
i have also gone away from bearing buddies, as consensus is that they allow dirt/grit to enter the bearings more readily, they can potentially blow out the rubber seals, and that you only gain an advantage from pumping them up just before you back your trailer into the water.
I can verify first hand, that a set of bearings / condition of grease, using a dust cap, looked better after 12 months, than a set of bearings / condition of grease, using bearing buddies.

Agree grayzee, the blue
Agree grayzee, the blue marine stuff struggles with heat. Option is to keep pumping in new blue grease all the time or use HTB grease which does not like moisture but better with heat and keep pumping in the grease.
Bottom line, keep pumping grease in and regularly pull the bearings out, clean and repack.
And DON'T back into cold water with hot bearings.......

Nulon High Pressure grease.
Nulon High Pressure grease. Its red, its sticky. copes with heat and when I was doing my own bearings, I never had a problem and I towed 2-3 tonne boats all up and down the coast.
cheers

The yanks have a good setup
The yanks have a good setup which allows you to pump fresh grease right thru your bearings, for some reason no manufacturers here have adopted similar.

Got that on our trailer, a
Got that on our trailer, a grease nipple on the end of the axle that allows you to pump the grease to the back bearing, seems to work pretty good so far ( 4 years) I pull apart and repack or replace every 6 months, cant be too careful when its a biggish boat and hot weather.

htb
I go the htb as the water will mix with that grease where as the marine grease it will not so if you do get water into your bearings and park the boat up for a while you have a better chance.
as the marine grease will let the water sit on top and rust your bearing where if you have htb the grease has mixed with the grease and you might have a better chance at repacking your bearings just cleaning the grease out

Same. Both me and my brother
Same. Both me and my brother use Penrite HTB on both of our boat trailers and no problems 10 years on. Try to repack/new bearings once a year but more often do it once every two years or just before a big tow trip. Also using bearing buddies and just repump a bit of new grease into the hubs after each time out.

Vinesh87 mentioned it above
Vinesh87 mentioned it above and I would also be keen for any feedback - has anyone used or uses durahubs ? What are they like for reliability ?
