Trace or mono leader

Any advice would be greatley appreciated. A mate and myself are going fishing up north soon, and will be baitcasting mullies around bombies. My question is what is the better way to go, wire trace or mono leader?

80-100lb Mono

Go the mono fab, you may get bitten off by the odd mack/shark but you'll get a much better presentation and hook a lot more desirable fish.

.......on what your chasing, macs then single strand wire but for spango/trout/chinaman/rankins etc then as BJ said go mono. Look at using flurocarbon so you can go lighter in trace line ie 60lb for spooky fish and better abbrasion resistence when they try to bury you.

Macks

Even for macks i fish mono, plenty more hits and whats a bunch of ganged hooks worth. At least with mono on floaters you'll also hook dollies, sails and be in with a good chance of boating them, sailfish destroy SS traces pretty easy.

Never bothered with fluorocarbon for northern fishing myself.

Mostly after spanglies or c\trout. Reason i ask is because last time we were up we lost a couple of good fish when on  leader, chewed us straight through. Decided to change to wire, but the action slowed down dramatically. That  flurocarbon may be the go. Will look into that, cheers mate!!

fab, wire will put off reefy fish as you found, heavier mono can do the same especially on more spooky fish. Lighter the better and hense "our" preference to using flurocarbon.

I like using Jinkai Big John, not sure about diameter size compared to flurocarbon, but it is supple to tie knots with

Momoi

Jinkai is nice and my personal favourite is momoi. Supple, ties a great knot and not to bulky for its size.

The way I use to go through rigs, fluorocarbon was just burning money. If it's a one off annual trip though, it may be well worth it.
