For the saltist, are you
For the saltist, are you saying the lever drag 50 or the star drag 50? If the star drag, why the 50 over the 30 sizes in the saltists?
Been into the shops and had a play with them yet?

i been into a store and
i been into a store and have had a look at both the torium 30 and the daiwa 50 , the torium 30 is basically the same size as the daiwa 50 an the daiwa 50 costs more , the daiwa 30 would be to small wouldnt it ? the toriums line capacity is greater then that of the daiwa 50 , but the daiwa 50 drag is 22lbs as aposed to the 20lb drag of the torium 30 , i like both reels so im thinking ill get the torium for me birthday and buy the dawia saltist 50 in a few months treat myself to something nice lol . i have had a look at many reviews on the net and many are the some people like the daiwa more some people like the shimano more. cheers again hlokk

Dont worry about comparable
Dont worry about comparable sizes, they'll all hold enough line (50lb, 300m).
Keep in mind the difference between the saltist star drags and the saltist lever drags. The 30T or 30TH is the star drags and has a little bit narrower spool (which make its easier to levelwind). As far as I remember, the 30t/th have the same diameter as the 40 and 50 but the 40 and 50 are wider. Theres also a 30H which is smaller diameter but i havent seen them much. The star drag saltists (30 size at least) should be around $300 (or a little under)
The saltist LD's are a different story. The 30 is tiny (but widish). The 40 or 50 lever drag sizes should be good though. I think even the 30 should hold enough line though (and still has the drag). They feel different to the star drag (silver) saltists. I didnt like the 2 speed reel feel though, but i have a single speed and its nice. However, play around with the two speeds anyways. These are about $360 (single speed)
Also, remember when comparing different sized spools you cant compar gear ratios. The lever drag reels are small, but pull in heaps of line (good for pump and wind). Though, depending on what you want, you may want a more grunty but slower retreive. The spool acts as a gear, so big reels dont equal speed or power and vice versa. It all depends.
Dont worry about small differences in drag. On 50lb, you wouldnt really run more than 8kg max anyways.
I wouldnt get a saltist later if you allready had the torium as they're pretty similar. (unless you meant the saltist LD). If you got one of those reels now for 50lb, and wanted another reel later you could get something like the saltist LD20 which would be great for 30lb, or perhaps a spinning reel if you like?

six or half a dozen i reckon
six or half a dozen i reckon mate, unless ya talking the lever drag?
I guess if you wanna split hairs from what I have heard the saltist has a couple of parts that are more durable (something to do with the anti-reverse or something?) but the torium casts better.
Toriums a fair bit cheaper mate, I think bluewater had the 30 at $240 online but a lot of shops were willing to match that price when i bought mine a while ago. love it btw

the problem with the shimano
the problem with the shimano overhead was the line release lever its quite flimsy and breaks easy, saltist is a tried and proven reel just make sure if you buy the silver one its the updated version with the carbon drag both the lever and star drags have great reviews.

wow the daiwa saltist single
wow the daiwa saltist single speed LD50H looks pretty mean , might have to look at scoring one of them , i just hope that if i purchase the torium things dont F*@# up with it . The 190 sea boy penn i have atm i have draged in a few decent size fish and that hasnt failed me yet . this site is basically the reason i have gott to experiment fishing with overhead reels and different rods , basically before i fished oldschool with handlines , pulling in dhufish samson fish , you name it . I still use a handline for live baits because i love the fight. But before then i never used any sort of reel or rod . thanks for all the advice people.

if you couldnt break your
if you couldnt break your seaboy then you wont have a chance in hell breaking the saltist, regarding the shimano accidents do happen like if the lever gets knocked etc and continuous use its gonna wear out(like bending a wire back and forth eventually its gonna snap).

If you thrash your gear and
If you thrash your gear and it gets alot of uses then buy it "LOCALLY", for me i give my gear a thrashing but i wash it and clean it after each use and i do my own servicing of them.
