Thompson bay beach mooring system?
Submitted by Rig on Tue, 2013-10-29 05:58
Has anyone used this beach mooring system at Thompson bay?
I just want to know does this mean your boat is about 5m or so off the beach?
I wont be sleeping on my boat is there usually much chance of stuff going missing out of your boat over there?
I will ring the visitor centre today but from what I can gather the mooring is free but you just have to pay the island entrance fee

Used it a couple of times.
Used it a couple of times. Depends on how you set your anchor & the length you make your stern ropes to the loops on the beach as to how for from the beach your boat sits. Tides move a bit more out there than on main land, few boats have had to wait for tide to come back in before they can leave.

Have hooked my boat up there
Have hooked my boat up there plenty of times. You can have your boat as close to the beach as you like. You will just need to let off more rope from your boat. Drop the anchor as you are reversing in so that way you can have tension on all ropes. You will need to bring ropes aswell as there is just the anchor points there noting else

Would have to be unlucky to
Would have to be unlucky to have stuff knocked off, being the boats are in plain view of everyone at the pub ..

car
yeah not that i would leave too much in it. I think I should be more concerned about where I park my car and boat trailer

fenders
Make sure you got a few fenders (at least 4) as well mate, cause theres a good chance that the bloke next to you wont. We have had some rods go missing from the rocket launchers one night once before so we lock everything in the v-berth now. Check the tides too. Have seen plenty of boats that end up sitting on the bottom in the morning waiting for the tide to come in. We have 15m ropes and they are about perfect for us.

First in first served too.
First in first served too. If it is a busy weekend you could struggle to get one. I have used them during the winter no problem but summer may be more difficult.

busy
yeah thats correct randall if its busy aparrently you head a bit further past the pub and anchor up but need to use 2 anchors instead of making use of the ropes

You can also anchor up
You can also anchor up around the army jetty and also in longreach or at parker point. Just much further to travel

They also close them
They also close them completely from 6am-6am New Year's Eve to new years day and 6am until late arvo Rotto swim day. If you subscribe to RIA website they email you all the "notice to mariners" before stuff happens. They great but. I use em all the time and love em! Wish there was more

So is this a park up
and if you leave to go fishing, cruising etc do you loose "your" spot?

pretty much
I think so cransy you cant really reserve a spot although I am sure people try to.
I will be there in November for a weekend we have accomodation so all I really need is somewhere I can moor the boat and access it during the day for some fishing, snorkelling and pulling the pots. Those raft ups on the public holiday or xmas period would be mayhem I imagine

I would recon. I have never
I would recon. I have never used them as we had moorings there. Still have access to moorings in Tommy, Narrow neck and Jordy we can use but its a long haul from Mandurah to Rotto. Would be easy though to just park up and go to accomodation rather than tendering in. Just remember that Dr Walters (I think) and his wife who got blown out to be never seen again after trying to row in from their yacht.

So what happens on Rotto swim
So what happens on Rotto swim day? There must be hundreds of boats who participated in the race fighting for moorings? is it more trouble than its worth participating as a spotter? If the moorings are closed to late arvo then how does everyone with boats get onto the beach? I'm just wondering as a bloke from work has asked me to spot him in next years swim.

The moorings arnt closed
The moorings arnt closed during the day, just the 16 beach pens in front of Aristos. Being a skipper for the swim as you get in so late compared to everyone else you need either a mooring booked, (then you need a tender or someway to get to shore), or there is another 30 beach pens in bathurst bay north of ferry jetty you can book but only 3 months in advance or you gamble and wait. The rangers wont say but they do open the free beach pens once they have packed up the swim completely (usually about 4pm). If you hang around and keep an eye out you can grab one of these. That photo above is this years rotto swim day.
