OIL has polluted the upper reaches of the Swan River after thousands of litres were spilled following a truck accident this morning.

About 1000 litres of the contaminant entered the river through roadside drains when an oil-filled transformer fell from the back of a truck on Guildford Rd about 10am.

DEC Pollution Response Unit manager Ken Raine said it was hard to determine the extent of the contamination because the oil was colourless.

The Department was working with the Swan River Trust to contain the spillage at Banks Reserve in Maylands.

He was concerned wildlife in the area could be injured.

“Birds may or may not be covered in oil we are just trying to get close enough to determine that,” Mr Raine said.

FESA spokesman Mike Klemer said the 12-tonne transformer hit the bottom of a railway bridge as it was travelling towards the CBD.

Four thousand litres of oil spilled when it toppled.

A section of Guildford Rd was closed to traffic while authorities mopped up.

Oil-absorbing material was also spread on the road to contain the spill.

Drains had been blocked and pump trucks were called in this afternoon to suck contaminated water from the drains.

Dont worry Hoju theres nothing in our river anyway, lol. With the amount of shit we either knowingly pour or spill in to our river we may as well just fill it in. We obviously dont know how to look after it anyway. I certainly wouldnt eat anything out of it thats for sure.
