Steering stuck

Got an older boat pride model, 71 to 72 Evinrude, she's been a good old girl, start her up every weekend with no probs, was planning on heading out tommorow but it doesn't look like its going to happen now.

Did my weekly checks and I found the steering is stuck hard I cant seem to free it up Cry

Any one got any idea's on how to free the steering up

its the grey cable, any idea on what its worth to replace ? can it be done by my self ?

I dont know what type it is but here a couple of links to view what its like

Frozen Steering

Thu, 2009-02-19 13:32

Tommy check the steering shaft on the left hand side of the Outboard its a stainless steel rod that retacts into a metal tube on front of the Outboard if its not regularly greased it will freeze up inside the tube. To fix problem you need a long heavy duty Screwdriver or a metal drift and hammer you need to unbolt the arm attached to the shaft and use the metal drift and hammer to drive the shaft out from the opposite end. Hope this makes sense.

had the same issue

Thu, 2009-02-19 15:06

on my tinnie I had the same problem last year and it turned out to be salt water effecting the grease. Where the shaft runs there is a grease nipple and I was using marine grease to lubricate the stainless steel steering shaft. I found that after a few months the salt water was making the grease go hard and form into clumps that ended up jamming the steering on the motor. We took it apart and cleaned as much of the old grease out as possible.

I then spayed nearly a whole can on CRC tackle guard inside the cable and along the stainless shaft. Now before each time I go out I simply spay it with a light weight spray oil and I haven't had the problem since.

hope this makes sense and good luck

turns the old hard grease soft again but if it is rusty it will proberly snap on you when you take it out next so you are better of replacing it

Yer I can't get it to move at all,

I've removed the cable it self, the the stainless shaft will spin round but wont turn the steering left or right.

also the shaft will side off the stainless bit ok, but thats as far as we could get it.

OK sounds like the cable is the problem. Do you think?
