Sounder Shot - Dhuie Released
Submitted by JohnF on Mon, 2012-12-31 21:54
Good shot of a dhuie released via release weight today on Matts Raymarine, clearly showing it going down on the release weight, the release weight being brought bacl up, and the duie swimming back to its hidy hole.
Two dhuies released without weight, two needed weight, all were brought up slowly and swam for a minute at 10 m before bringing aboard, which normally does not require the release weight. A couple of dhuies, a nice baldie and black arse were "released" to the esky.

Another great sounder pic
It's interesting that the fish only shows after its release and not on the way down. Can anyone explain why?

On the way down the fish is
On the way down the fish is vertical so from the top will have a tiny surface area for the sounder to bounce off, once it is released to goes back to being horizontal with a very increased surface area for sounder to hit.

I doubt the sounder could
I doubt the sounder could discriminate between the lighter airbladder next to the very dense release weight.

Nice shot.John - Baldie on
Nice shot.
John - Baldie on jig is a fairly rare occurance to me. I rarely get baldie's on jigs unless they have squid attractors on the assists and they are left unworked. Good stuff.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Release
Nice on John I agree with the decompression stop on the way up I had a couple swim back down in 40m yesterday, doesn't work 100% of the time but sometimes release weights don't work either especially with coral trout

Grayzee, yeah, baldies are
Grayzee, yeah, baldies are hard on jig but I have got most of mine without squid assists, but I rarely use squid assists so maybe it is just law of averages. I was jigging quite quick and at least 10m off the bottom when it hit, quite surprised!
No one has pulled me up yet for the fact we did not drop the dhuie all the way to the bottom, which is apparently the best way.......I blame the deckie, he has been given a written warning.....haha.....but we did get it down at least 3/4 of the way, and nice to see it swim down afterwards.

Yep cool sounder shot We have
Yep cool sounder shot
We have not had to use the release weight for a while now. All the dhu's and baldies are swimming off strong from 30-40m. Especially the smaller dhu's they rocket fof most times.
Bought up slowly and usually pointed head down with a bit of push and away they go.
