Everyone wants to get a LB

Tue, 2011-05-03 14:02

Everyone wants to get a LB snapper. But only few have had the luck – not me as yet. North molo is supposed to be good, but has been really quiet lately. Generally stormy weather and paternoster rig should be the go.

you want to really get down

Wed, 2011-05-04 15:16

you want to really get down there when there is a solid storm.

When the swell picks up and the there is a nice NW wind you have a very good chance of a LB snapper. Any of the rockwalls can hold snapper when conditions are right you just have to put the effort in, especially in conditions most see as shocking. When fishing for snapper you dont need to send you bait a mile out alot of people hook up closer to the stones.

I have heard that the snapper come in to feed off the crabs that fall off the rocks. I have a theory that the best time for this will be when the front hits and the first couple of hours of a big storm when a majority of crabs will be "caught out" causing a pulse of fish to come in. This is just a theory though and im hoping to trial it this year.

Snapper

Wed, 2011-05-04 15:54

The thing with LB snapper you have to be willing to put in the hours, some may be lucky and rock up and be on but as a rule you have to put in the hours for the reward. The storms defiantly bring them in and you will be in with a chance if you are down ther when it is blowing a gale. With that said you do get them the days after. The north mole is a popular spot and the "alvey whisperer" can be seen down there on a dark and stormy night. The ASI was always reliable as well as the ocean reef marina. Bait wise mulies, blue macks, scalies all work as well as gardies if you have them. A grapnel sinker is a must I feel especially if the weather is rough however if you are fishing the calm after the storm a star or even a spoon sinker will suffice. But it must be said be careful when you are doing this type of fishing as it can be very dangerous when the swell is running and it is in the dark.

anyway hope this helps a little,

Cheers Carps

Yep I agree with carps, you gotta put the time and effort in if you want to pull the big snapper in

yea i do agree with alot of things every one is saying with the winds and big storms really do make a diffrence. i also do have alot of exsperence fishing rocks and really keeping an eye out for the rough waves and the big king ones that can hit rocks time to time. i'm just hoping that the next big storm brings some snapper but the reality is probly diffrent and i  think i have to put alot more hours in the figure out what baits "really" do work and the ones that dont, same goes for rigs and hooks. all this info should be a help to help me see some decent fish caught with the stones. even thoe i would be happy to catch a just legal one at 50cm lol ;)

thanks for all the info provided

On this topic- I now agree

Mon, 2011-05-09 07:10

On this topic-

I now agree whole heartedly you do not need massive storms or even rock walls. Whilst cooking dinner on saturday night i had a message and 4 missed calls from my dad. Managed to get a hold of him and i was told with great excitement he got a Pinky at 82cm and 8kg.

Whitin 20 mins of the phonecall I am sent another message saying second fish is 105cm and around 12kg as his scales become unacurate after about 10kg. just waiting on the final weight now as he gave the fish away as it wouldnt release.

These fish were landed from a very metro beach and both landed before 8pm. I have a photo but its phone quality. Pity as it would be a contender for Photo of the month IMO.

I caught a 4kg snapper off of

Mon, 2011-05-09 08:19

I caught a 4kg snapper off of north mole on a nice balmy evening, on the second time I ever went there. "Well this is just too easy!" I was thinking. Have since spent countless nights there, some in some seriously shite weather trying for another with no luck. I'm sure that if I spent enough time there I would get another, but fishing in a winter storm is a pretty miserable affair.

If you're not stupid enough to sit there in a storm like osme of us, go the night after. You're on with a chance and never know what the increased river flow might bring as well. Imo, fishing in Perth is a bit of a lottery but you got to be in it to win it and you're better off spending a few comfortable nights with a line in than one miserable night as a human lightning attractor.

Snapper off of a metro beach?! Anyone else had any luck off of the beaches? I'm not a fan of scrabbling around on the rocks.

i do agree with snapper

Mon, 2011-05-09 09:12

i do agree with snapper fishing off the rocks is a lottary bt there are some patterns that may emergeas witch storm to fish and whitch ones not to. this is why i'm trying to find out as mutch info as people are willing to give. the most i'v learnt bout catching them at my spot is no moon rough as guts and nice mulie fillets do the trick very well
