snagged cray pots

Hey everyone,

Well i went to pull 1 of my pots the other day and it wasnt quite in the sand where i left it but found it 50m away over the reef. So after 15mins of trying to pull it up and in all different directions i come to the conclusion that its snagged pretty good. So does anybody know any little tricks to unsnag it or do i need to make friends with a diver? Pot is in about 12 to 13 meters of water.

Cheers, Paul

Put a set of goggles on so you can see what direction you need to pull it from. Or get directly over it and give the rope a strong jerk and release a few times, sometimes its enough to get it free.

Haha yeah i was thinking that mite be the easiest option. Was considering jumping over and pulling myself down the pot rope to try get a better look and then pull it in whatever direction is needed. cheers for the advice.

try this

couple seasons ago my father in law show me how he use to unsnagg his pots. What he did was try the rope off to the bollard with about double the depth of rope out and slowley drive forward till the rope is tight then turn a little and apply a bit more throttle, the boat will start to go round and a a circle and each 1/4 to 1/2 circle he put a bit more throttle till the pot came free every time. Im not so sure how good for the reef this is but it workede!!

cheers man, thats a pretty good idea aslong as u dont over do it with the throttle and do damage to the boat. Also the surrounding reef if reletivly rugged so it mite just end up snagged again.

Thanks for the suggestion tho!

all my pots that have been snagged i have extended the rope to lessen teh angle so im not pulling it up so much. i generally head in a south westerly direction as that is generally the way the swell comes in and the wind

googles is a good idea,

googles is a good idea, unles you know a diver.

If pulling yourself down the rope in 12 metres of water, should be able to get atleast 4 or so metres down for a good look. Some times you can free it yourself by just being in the water.

How much extra rope did you have out on top of the water?

I generally try keep mine to about 2-3 metres more than the depth im in.

But has been bigger than normal tides, anyone seen woodies lately with the bigger tides???? Jettys under water!
