size pinkies out wide
Submitted by grayzeee on Mon, 2010-07-05 16:48
is anyone getting any good sized pinkies in 30+ meters.
the only good ones i've had have come from anchor burleying on 3 mile.
all the ones i get outside are undersize.
i'm getting into dhueys but never had a quality pinkie off same ground.
do you target the same areas for them ??
am i missing something??

40's have some
Not every trip, but quite often we get into some around the 5 to 9 kg mark in August and September.
This one in August last year
This one in September last year
Another from last August
Another from August 2007
Sept 2006
Not sure where they hang in winter, but Aug / Sept is pretty common in the 40's for me.
They are around at other times though and others probably catch them more often than I do, but they definately hang around similar ground to Dhuies. Quite often the big ones are a bit away from the lump or feature you are fishing so don;t cut your drifts too short.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Pinkies
I generally find the same thing Graham, occasionally we might get a good one, but when I say good, I mean only about 5kgs. We are generally plagued by undersize ones but have noticed an absence of them on our last two trips. On an average we would get a keeper every second trip or thereabouts.

cheers for the feedback guys
cheers andy , will give that a go and drift off the spot a bit
thinking about it , will try drift baiting it too , hoping they're up in the water a bit.
i did read an article about the guys down bunbury , getting them on flat sandy whiting grounds too. just can't bring myself to drift until something might see your bait

my last couple of trips out in 40 and 50 metres
we were catching legal pinkies and dhuis on the same drifts as well as some very large foxfish. Dhuis were taking herring while pinkies were hitting the squid. It was slow but productive. Like Andy, I am finding that it takes some work not just finding good ground but determining where the legal fish are hanging out at. Good luck!
